and to avoid the personal attacks. I did not go to any prom. I was homeschooled, but invited to other schools' proms. it really didn't seem like a big deal to me. I'm different. I'm the chic who prefers gifts of electronics over jewelry on anniversaries and bdays .
I wan to know how the parents who held the white only prom justified having it this year. My understanding is that the blacks only prom did not happen this year.
The history is that this town used to have a high school prom until 1971. When the school was required to integrate (note how long they continued to resist after Brown v. Board of Education) they stopped having a prom so they wouldn't have to hold an integrated prom. This is the same phenomenon as towns that closed their municipal swimming pools when they were ordered integrated and towns that closed their public schools and replaced them with "private" schools that were colloquially known as seg academies.
It's telling that the parents who are sponsoring the white prom (and incidentally, they don't just prohibit black students, they also prohibit anyone who attends the black prom) are refusing to talk to the press. It's obvious that their racism would be exposed if they did.
Nope, racism is alive and well in the deep south...I live in a small town in NE GA and I HATE it here and that is one of the many reasons, I keep hoping the real estate market will re-bound soon so I can clear out of here.
It's a public school not a private and any school related activities should not be segrigated.
