I think this story speaks for itself.

Coroner: 5-year-old boy shoots 2-year-old sister in Kentucky with rifle he got as a gift - The Washington Post

Quote:
By Associated Press, Updated: Wednesday, May 1, 8:07 PM
BURKESVILLE, Ky. — In southern Kentucky, where some children get their first guns even before they start first grade, Stephanie Sparks was cleaning the kitchen as her 5-year-old son played with the small rifle he was given last year. Then, as she stepped onto the front porch, “she heard the gun go off,” a coroner said.
In a horrific accident Tuesday that shocked a rural area far removed from the national debate over gun control, her son, Kristian, had fatally shot his 2-year-old sister, Caroline, in the chest, authorities said.

Those parents should go to jail for a long time.

When they are not strong enough to squeeze the trigger.
It also helps to have responsible parents and a place to shoot daily.

There's already a rather lengthy discussion on here:

These parents may be charged; time will tell.

But you're right - negligence is usually only punished when something goes wrong; as it did in this case. However, if you leave your baby alone in a car - you can be charged even if the baby found to be healthy and well.
Yes, it has been acknowledged that child endangerment is punishable by law even if no harm comes to the child. However, in these cases the negligent behavior poses a clear danger to the child.

Naturally, this raises the question what behavior would be considered child endangerment that results in punishment of the parent(s). Our current approach appears to be completely arbitrary...

You see, having a gun in the same room poses danger to a child. So does a knife. When, why, and how does reasonable behavior cross the line into negligence that endangers a child?

The problem with arguments about gun control encompasses this question:

A gun is a weapon.
A knife is a weapon.

A child uses a gun and accidentally kills another child.
We want to restrict (or ban) guns.
Or only certain guns?

A child uses a knife and accidentally kills another child.
Do we argue that knives should be restricted (or banned)?
Or only certain knives?

Why? Why not?

Thanks. I checked first, and didn't notice anything with a similar thread title to mine.

The liberal anti-rights crowd on CD is downright giddy about this story. Nothing sells an agenda better than dead children and we all know that liberals sure do love some dead children.
