Let's wait until Jan 1 to see what the numbers will be when Obamacare is fully implemented. I'm thinking there will be a lot of people working less than 30 hours a week after Jan 1 And a lot of companies with 55-60-65 people will be letting people go to get under 50 employees.
Don't you recall all those workers that got moved to 29 hours so they'd be part time and exempt ?
You need to keep up with the news.
There were headlines all over the place about companies doing that.
The law requires everyone full time, not "everyone" and 29 hours isn't full time.
Exactly!!! I guess the op has decided to pull his/her head out of the sand finally and step into reality. Businesses have already laid of workers AND put workers on the new defined part time basis. And more is coming.
Has the op not bothered to read the numerous threads from lefties complaining about this??
Well, since obamacare has technically not taken over yet, (even though somethings have), let's see the numbers in November, I would also like to see the numbers from companies the go from full time employees to part time employees...
You won't be able to get that as before the IRS ruling each company could choose what was considered full time anywhere between 30-40 hours per week. Since the IRS ruling, 30 hours is now considered full time.
I know Walmart reported major scheduling changes and now requires 30 hours to qualify for their health insurance plan.
This is a common misconception by the yahoos, who think what HappyTexan just said. The law REALLY says "full-time Equivalents." So, a company that has 99 employees can make everyone half-time and get the total FTE below 50. A company with 500 employees still has to cover every employee, regardless of whether they are FT or PT.
Then why is Wal Mart hiring everyone new as part time?
Employees hired after Feb. 1, 2012, who fail to average the magic 30-hours per week requiring a company to provide a healthcare benefit, will lose their healthcare benefits on the following January. Part-time workers hired after Jan. 15, 2011, but before Feb. 1, 2012, will be able to hang onto their Walmart health care benefit if they work at least 24 hours a week.

If they could get away with fewer workers, they would have already.

You missed the "loophole" though.
Employees on medicaid don't count. Walmart played the game and runs a tight ship.
Walmart avoids paying insurance and avoids paying the penalty.
Keep the workers low enough to qualify for medicaid and Walmart has accomplished getting the American taxpayer to "pay their fair share".
A duh moment is coming: The law requires employers to cover everybody not just the ones they want like professional staff as has been the practice. If you don't lay off workers who you don't cover now but will have to cover on Obamacare your costs go up. Duh, huh? Where's the layoffs?
yep, every one considered to be full time, and not on some kind of government insurance like medicare or medicaid. many small businesses are limiting their total employee count to 49 to avoid having to supply health insurance to their employees. larger companies are cutting costs by not replacing employees that leave the company. other businesses are not expanding unless they have to.

there are enough loopholes in the obamacare law that allow businesses to get away with not supplying health insurance.
