Why do we the people refuse to impeach our president who talks so outrageous this way? I don't care if he was being serious or seriously absent minded. It's just awful to say such a thing as the president of the United States of America.
It's no worse than this.....

Well sorry some on here are very sarcastic, sorry if I asumed you were being it

My beliefs come from things I experience in life, things I feel things I learn about. Not from just the media. when my neighbor and others I have spoke to have said these things to me, as " lessor of two evils" or they will win anyway might as well vote for them, or he "looks" Presidential, or I want a woman, it brings me to worry for the state of the nation. Most I have run into, dont even know the position of the candidates, they are simply voting based on TV ads and what their peers are doing. And I read it here too, same things being said, or I cannot vote for him because he talk wildly or his ears are funny and so on. Scary.

I least I will guarantee to America that I will not be voting to keep any of my congressmen in office when I vote in 2008.
My opinion is that Washington as a whole needs an entire house cleaning/deep cleansing,. Problem is doing it all at once. The sad part about it is, who do you replace them with - especially when the public allows themselves to be sold on candidates name recognition or party affiliation. It's pathetic and frustrating. Unfortunately there is no simple solution.

Why are so many "people" opposed to getting rid of the electoral college and just having the president picked by popular vote? It would seem to me that the popular vote would be the "american way".
The electoral college is , as far as I can find (opening myself up to serious criticism), voted in place by political parties and while there are some(not as many as I would have expected) requirements for the post they vary somewhat state by state.
Also as we know you can win the pop vote but lose the electoral. I know I am being idealistic but that doesn't seem right. I can see why some of the masses would feel that their vote didn't really count.

Trying to keep on topic: polls are rarely accurate and even more rarely do they really get a good sampling of the public.

And while the American voting public may not be made up of geniuses(was it ever) most of us are reasonably intelligent. Maybe a little disillusioned and sometimes apathetic but still with some basic intelligence. At least as much as President Bush.

Eliminating the electoral college would, among other things, largely limit the election to urban areas in a handful of states. Our founders realized that this would be hazardous to our national sense of unity and fairness.

For example, the whole purpose of creating a bicameral legislative system was to provide smaller states a fair level of representation through the Senate -- which is balanced by the House's proportional representation, favoring the larger states.

The Electoral College system provides for 50 separate Presidential "elections", thus ensuring that the President must campaign for, and receive, the mandate of the entire country, not just a few densely-populated areas.

What you don't understand is that stupid people are in certain locations. If you look, at major cities where there is more middle class to upper class citizens, they tend to vote for better candidates. It is the rural counties and low income people that tend to vote for the worse candidates. Unfortunately, most of the country is low income and those that are living in rural areas have more "power" in votes than a larger city in the same state. Appealing to the stupid is easier than appealing to someone that is smart.

Good luck with that constitutional amendment.

I do oppose simplemindedness but that seems to be a very electable quality these days.

But I also oppose purposeless layers of government, exactly how I would characterize the Electoral College.
