Countries like Russia Germany and Japan are worried about population decline. Japan is expected to lose 25% of its population by 2050.

No millions of other people that have made humanity better.

We have had an ever increasing population since the beginning of time. What negative consequencs have we suffered as a result?

People are living longer, healthier lives now than at any point in history. The human condition has continuously been improving since the cave man days. So has population. So why do people think population growth is a bad thing???

Why do people believe that something that has had zero negative consequences in the past will all of a sudden in the future? Makes about as much sense as lug nuts on a donut.

I look at this way. The more people there are the more people there are to solve problems. People cannot solve problems if they are not born.

And the 2 largest factors in population growth are lower infant mortality rates and longer life spans. It has little to do with birth rates. These are the 2 greatest accomplishments ever by mankind. Even with replacement level fertility rates, population will increase as long as those 2 things continue to improve.
So what if infant mortality is lower, the people coming into this world are so dumb they can barely screw in a light bulb without a manual. And you need workers, not a bunch of geriatrics or centenarians.

World population growth

I made this graph to help visualize world population growth. It shows both the increases in number of actual people as an area graph, and the increase by percentage as a red line.

The devestation to world population growth in the early 1960's is unknown to most people. In fact the combination of people that died and the babies that weren't born may have equaled the impact caused by WWII. Do you know what happened?

By percentage growth, the world population peaked in over 50 years ago.
By number of people added to the planet each year, the peak was in 1989.

But even though percentage growth drops in recent years, the number of people added year after year has stabilized at around 75 million.

I would like to solicit comments. Do people believe that this is enough change? Is it sufficient to stabilize growth (in absolute numbers) or do you think it is necessary to reduce the number added every year?

Of course growth is not uniform as Africa and South Asia still has skyrocketing growth, while populations in North America, Europe, East Asia, and even Latin America are stabilizing.
your graph is interesting (abet a little hard to look at)

fact we have 7 Billion on this planet(AND GROWING)...with 1 Billion starving.......those are the numbers people need to look at

and BTW global warming will HELP to feed people as you cant grow in freezing weather

funny you mention a country like japan....a island with only a finite amount of land and resourses....its about the size of nevada...with half our population (130 million)

losing 24% of its pop would be a good thing for that PETICULAR country

I ws just stating the 2 main reasons we have had population increases.

People on the left seem to think it's because too many people are breeding.

Blacks are 3 times as likely to get an abortion than whites. I forget the exact number but poor women are more likely to get one than wealthy women. No wonder Democrats love abortion so much. It gets rid of people they don't like.

They been freaking out over there about losing population.

People live so long there now and there are so few young people around they have no idea how the economy will survive.

Immigration is a no-no. So they are in desperate need of people having children. The Japanese government has offered incentives for couples to have kids, to no avail.

Not sure where you got all that from my post. I don't think growing the population to 50 billion is a good idea. It might be doable if technology can be dramatically increased and maintained but it is hardly the ideal scenario.

What gives you the right to decide how many people are allowed to be alive anyway? Is your ego that big?
No, the planet is that small.
Each person has a point at which enough is enough.
Having children is becoming much less of a blessed event than it used to be.
Generally, whatever is too numerous becomes more expendable, which could be a concept that prevents us from mourning all the innocent dead from these foriegn wars we seem to be enjoying so much. It may also contribute to the abortion rate

Years back, when we were tribal, the idea was to have as many children as possible to strike fear in other tribes. People also had children to take care of them in their old age. A large number of people live in countries in which these are no longer concerns.

I think it's about time that the US government took a hard look at removing the tax break, per child, for parents. They should be paying more for the extra drain on our resources that their brood causes.

The USA population is not growing at some an incredible pace because Americans are having too many babies. It's all due to very massive immigration and the sky high birth rates of immigrants - especially the illegal ones.

Get control over immigration and our population is quite stable.

It aint nobody else's business.
Except for the fact that local property owners have to pay about $10,000 a year for every child for every year in the public school system. And the fact that many of the children being born in America are to single mothers who are poor and eligible for welfare, food stamps, subsidized health care, etc.

People should have as many kids as they can AFFORD, and our nation needs to stop subsidizing having children at a time when the labor force is grossly overpopulated and real wages have been falling since 1972.
