I would say you are the exception to the rule, not the norm.
Most would go for the "free stuff"
Why shouldn't they? The government doesn't want to treat them equally, why shouldn't they take advantage of every loophole there.
I have spent thousands of dollars on legal paperwork to try to have SOME of the protections that a $60 marriage certificate would provide. It doesn't cover anywhere near what a marriage license does, but it is the best that I can do.
"Legal guardian" means something and it would not be captured in this situation. You're not someone's legal guardian unless you've been appointed by the probate court with jurisdiction.
