As Edwin Albin penned " In a democracy you do not always get you want but you always get what you deserve" That is one of the very few aspects of democracy that I like that there is poetic justice.

I'm tired of always talking about Detroit. what about the owns left uninhabitable because of the decisions made by cons who are in bed with gas companies? it won't take 1000 yrs to stop the crime in Detroit, but there are places in this country where the water might never be safe to bathe in, swim in, or drink for as long as people live on the earth.

IT IS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL THAT WAGED WAR AND HAVOC WITH MICHIGAN AND DETROIT. IT WAS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY THAT ALLOWED NAFTA AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER. DON'T BLAME DEMOCRATS TRYING TO ADDRESS BIGOTED SOUTHERNERS WHO MOVED TO DETROIT AND IMPOSED THEIR RACIST HOUSING LAWS ON BLACKS. BOTH WHITES AND BLACKS ARE TO BLAME FOR THE PROBLEMS IN THE CITY OF DETROIT, BUT IT IS THE REPUBLICAN PARTY THAT MOVED ALL THE JOBS OUTSIDE THE COUNTRY. POST MANUFACTURING = REPUBLICAN POLICY. So, as an American, you should be ashamed of yourself to say that you have no pity of what happened to a great American city. Trust me, no European country would have allowed this to happen. AND BY THE WAY TO ALL OF YOU WHO ALWAYS BLAME THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY, LOOK AT CANADA ACROSS THE RIVER FROM DETROIT....CANADA IS A SOCIALIST COUNTRY AND THEY SEEM TO BE DOING MUCH BETTER.

1. '67 race riots lead to white flight - taking a large percentage of the tax base to the suburbs

2. Population decline of 1 million people since the 50's - it's not just that the city has too little money, but they have too large of an infrastructure with people too spread out.

3. Decline of auto industry - Detroit did not have the foresight to diversify their local economy.

The politics and corruption has played a more minor role in the decline of the city as compared to the above three. As for number 3, the UAW is not the sole bearer of blame... UAW workers were not the ones designing and green lighting car models that were not selling. The auto execs were too slow to react to the rising oil prices of the 70's, giving foreign car manufacturers an in for their small cars. The reliability issues (again, not UAW's fault) that plagued several domestic brands/models further weakened their market share.
1967 was 46 years ago. Lots of time for Detroit to have gotten its act together.

I agree the UAW is not alone in blame for the auto industry problems. Management chose what cars to build. What they looked like. How much fuel they used. And they didn't have the courage to negotiate better contracts with the UAW. Both the UAW and management thought the good times would just go on and on. Both of them could have seen the handwriting on the wall and made changes. I really wish Chrysler had been allowed to fail the first time it was bailed out. I think it would have shocked the rest of the industry and properly scared them that they had to perform to continue.

Um, Bill Clinton signed NAFTA into law, and Democrats have held Congress about 75% of the time over the last 40-50 years.. Give it a break with the bull crap.

I agree-the D2 would have secured more reasonable contracts decades ago, and they would have avoided Bankruptcy Court altogether.

There is some truth to that. I remember when I worked at GM, one of the superintendants commented about the union contract negotiations. "Yep, management is getting tough this year. They aren't giving the union anything they didn't ask for".

Yes, the union contracts and policies were largely responsible for the decline of the industry. But, yes, management also went along with them. When times were busy and profits high, the last thing management wanted was a strike to cripple production. So when the union threatened, management agreed to generous pensions they couldn't fund and life long health care. 30 years later, when those chits came due, the whole house of cards came crashing down.

Sounds a lot like our government, on a small scale.

Um....Following diplomatic negotiations dating back to 1986 among the three nations, the leaders met in San Antonio, Texas, on December 17, 1992, to sign NAFTA. U.S. President George H. W. Bush, Canadian Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Mexican President Carlos Salinas, each responsible for spearheading and promoting the agreement, ceremonially signed it. The signed agreement then needed to be ratified by each nation's legislative or parliamentary branch.
Before the negotiations were finalized, Bill Clinton came into office in the U.S. and Kim Campbell in Canada, and before the agreement became law, Jean Chrétien had taken office in Canada.: hamd:

Yeah, things were nice and cush for the UAW workers downstate knocking down 100 Gs a year with OT and 200 if it were a two income family. Big beautiful home in the enclaves where DRs and Lawyers lived, cottage on a 40 acres up north a couple of brand spanking new cars in the driveway and the entitled little brats in private schools.

Have a big freakin slice of humble pie assembly boy

As a machinist in the UP working under a toothless teamsters contract i made a third of what the slob trolls were making below the bridge. And it wasnt because I was underpaid. It was because they were

MASSIVELY

overcompensated. The correction had to happen, hope you enjoyed it while the times were good but say hello to your competition like the Honda assembly plant in Greensberg IN. Those employees are paid a fair living wage and Downstate MI has no choice but to compete

NAFTA signed into law — History.com This Day in History — 12/8/1993

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is signed into law by President Bill Clinton. Clinton said he hoped the agreement would encourage other nations to work toward a broader world-trade pact.
