Why is it that cars must be insured in order for us being able and allowed to drive, but to protect our health in case something happens, or for any check up, health insurance coverage is not mandatory in the U.S.

I know not everybody drivers, must most Americans do, and so do most Americans against national health care insurance.

Why is it that? Shouldn't we be forced to have health insurance coverage as well?
This question is especially for those who are against Universal Health Care Insurance / Obamacare.

PS! Don't tell me the purpose of it is to protect other innocent people from my damages, then what about a(n) (mentally) ill person who could damage another person as well. Not going to doctor due to no insurance could be a liability. Many crazy people out there who murder, rape and commits other crimes could have helped if they had chance to seek a doctor.

Yes, cars must be insured if driving on public roads. Most states gives you fine, points, and some even take your car if it is uninsured.

Car insurance that is legally required is LIABILITY insurance. This is to protect innocence people against your negligence and and the of other bad drivers and people who do not know the difference between first party and third party insurance.

You are not legally required to insure your own car for damages.

How come? Shouldn't we be forced to have health insurance coverage as well?

What is that people can not understand that "how come" is dreadful language. Adults say "why is it that.."

Geeze man you are making my ears bleed.

It's a choice to buy a car it's not a choice to be born. The government is going to make you buy a product just for breathing. Then will they make everyone buy care-home insurance, and all the other types of insurances out there? I don't know what they are going to do with young people who don't have the funds anyway----put them in prison?

So the government wants to protect other people if injured, but not individual person and American?

car insurance is actually mandatory in name only. A few years ago I was hit by an uninsured driver who ran a red light. My agent told me that about 30 percent of drivers in my county (King County, WA) are uninsured.
