I think people need to step back and wait for the facts to come out before people start in on it. I have read in this thread how the parents waited until Kaitlyn turned 18 to file charges so they could charge her as a adult however this article states the relationship did not start until Kaitlyn turned 18, she was a adult when the relationship started.
I have also heard how the younger girl was 15 years old however the article also states that the younger girl was 14 when the relationship started.
Also the original article by the OP has been changed, I went to read it again and it has been updated to include that the two started dating when Kaitlyn was 18 and the younger girl 14.
KU, learn the definition of words like 'pedophile' before posting them. You may also review your history and learn that it was the nanny state liberals who were behind raising the age of consent 100 years ago. I think that was a big mistake, but presumably you don't.
You are right about one thing though; if a person is past the age of consent (whatever it is) the law should not make a distinction between a slightly older and a much older partner. People who are so insipid as to think that Kaitlyn ought to have more rights than someone else because the story is just so cute, annoy me as much as they annoy you. Age of consent laws are arbitrary, that's why they're different in each state. There is no scientific age at which sex stops being harmful.
The age of consent is 14 in Austria, Germany, Italy and Portugal. It's 13 in Spain: these countries don't have more traumatized teens than any other country. If anything a lower age of consent makes teens practice safe sex and have better education.
If age differences are harmful why is it legal for a 40 year old to have sex with an 18 year old? Is an 18 year old magically immune from exploitation and harm? Why is it legal for an 18 year old to be exploited in pornography?
There shouldn't be an age of consent. Sex should only be illegal if it's rape or if there is evidence that it harms someone.

Yes, boys over 18 do suffer the wrath of parents who don't like that their minor daughter is sexually active, but I'm sure that most sets of parents will sit down together and privately discuss the situation to save their children any public "embarrassment", and their own "embarrassment". Their first action should have been to confront Kate's parents and try to resolve it privately.
