In this new Ethan Hawke film set in 2022, the government allows 12 hours once a year for all citizens to commit crimes without fear of being arrested or held responsible for their crimes. Murder, rape, robbery, etc all allowed and there are no emergency services available during this time. It is a payoff for having an incredibly low crime and unemployment rate and to free up the prison system. Thoughts?

Total ripoff of the Star Trek episode "Return of the Archons" sounds like to me.
Are there any built in protections for politicians?
Haven't seen it, but in my version the government would not be able to protect them. They still would probably would be heldnup in their fortresses with armed private security.

Sounds like the basis for an entertaining horror movie, but... why wouldn't people commit crime the rest of the year?
I think it would only work because of all the parents killing their kids, thus fewer criminals and less poverty.

I don't get it. How could a period of lawlessness, something very few people desire, be a payoff? And if humans had degenerated to the point that large numbers of people actually looked forward to murder, rape, theft, etc., how could there be effective contol outside the 12-hour period?
