Great story on americans helping each other when tragedy strikes. If you read through the entire article you will see that the fireman that went to Oklahoma in 1995 died in the World Trade Center in 2001.

Quote:
Editorial: America's duty to help Oklahoma

On a memorable day 11 years ago, grateful Oklahomans donated a red and white
rescue truck to the New York City Fire Department, purchased with money donated
by schoolkids and adults. Called the Spirit of Oklahoma, the truck was the
Sooner State's way of thanking the FDNY for its help in 1995 with search and
recovery work after a terrorist bomb claimed 168 lives in Oklahoma City.

But reflecting on that moment today -- in the aftermath of the horrific
tornado that struck the Oklahoma city of Moore on Monday -- it seems that the
rescue truck might just as easily have been called the Spirit of America.

This is a nation of countless competing regions and economies and cultures
and religions and views -- a mix of passions and interests jostling and boiling
in a union that is not always so perfect. But we still have a way of coming
together to help each other with money, technical expertise, moral support --
and lives, if necessary -- when disaster strikes.

I am not sure we need someone lecturing us on how to be good hearted at times like this.

Americans love to argue, but when **** goes down, we always rally. I am confident folks of all political stripes are stepping up.

And we do. Every time. However, usually any hang up or dysfunction in help occurs is the portion the government tried to do. The government doesnt do a whole lot right, including millions in aide. Government handling money usually leads to bad things, dysfunction, slowness, etc

Why should the rest of us help people stupid enough to live in a place were tornados happen all the time. Why should the rest of us have to pay to rebuild houses, schools and other stuff for people too lazy to build these things with enough strength to sustain a tornado?

...Yes Leonard, that's sarcasm.

America's duty to help Oklahoma = Bullpatty's

I have no DUTY to help anyone. It is their duty to be prepared. That said when a tragedy strikes, I CHOOSE to help out. No one can tell me that it is my DUTY, not even some liberal wingnut on the interwebs.

If I had to guess, judging from the fact that it is talking to the New York area, I would say it is attempting to try and assuage any potential bad blood left over from when from when members of congress, including some from Oklahoma, voted to block Sandy relief aid.

A bit of a conundrum for Colburn though. Does he veto the upcoming tornado bill like he did the hurricane Sandy bill or does he get ripped a new one by his constituents. Pretty ugly. I'm sure he'll flip flop and say he never flip flops though.

See, he says he just wants to pay for it first by raising taxes...ha! I mean by cutting taxes...well aint that a pickle.
