The point is the media are being stifled, intimidated, etc. Without a free press, democracy cannot function.

When did it become the media's job to do an investigation? Next you will be telling me is that you support mod rule and that we should rampage IRS offices with torches.

I didn't think that is where they were going. Your imagination worketh overtime.

Where does DHS get off telling IRS employees they will lose their jobs if they talk to the press?????
Because they will lose their jobs if they talk about specific cases/applications/tax returns. All the media has to do is ask about one of the taxpayers that have gone public. If they answer, they're toast.

I would think that concern would come under the purview if the IRS not DHS.

This is the dilemma: the infrastructure built or expanded upon to fight the “war on terror” at this point is having disastrous effects on the US economy. Ultimately, we’re not going to have any choice other than to reign in runaway spending for The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Consider that the FBI’s budget alone is now well over $8,000,000,000 a year.

Also, with all the powers granted to these institutions under the US Patriot Act we’re witnessing inordinate levels of unethical behavior and corruption. For example, it’s come to light that the FBI is using agent provocateurs to inflate its success rate fighting against radicalized extremists.

Many civil liberties advocates also worry that these extrajudicial powers are leading to a STASI-like “Police State” and that argument is gaining momentum after the IRS scandal and the revelations about the Department of Justice's overreach with respect to a leak investigation involving the Associated Press.
