I am a Social-Democrat/Democratic Socialist, as are more and more Americans...in fact, it's more popular than the Tea Party: The BRAD BLOG : Poll: 'Socialism' More Popular Than 'Tea Party'

In my home town of Seattle, a local socialist candidate got 29% of the vote. A third party candidate of any kind usually doesn't get that much, but A SOCIALIST? And she's even more radical than I am (she's a Troskyite, I am anti-all things associated with the evil USSR)

Socialist Wins 29% of the Vote in Seattle

And the polls that show socialism is popular only say the word "socialism" and don't even qualify it, leaving things open from everything to Social Democracy to crazy "insurrectionist" socialism like Rosa Luxemburg and the "socialism" of the USSR and Cuba. If they just said "democratic socialism" you can be guaranteed more people would be for that.

Anyway, we socialists can all agree on one things: OBAMA ISN'T WITH US!

First, the bailout: giving money to banks to keep them huge is the opposite of socialism. If he nationalized bad banks, that would be one thing, but helping them screw over working people?

Second, his healthcare laws says that I have to buy healthcare FROM A CORPORATION. What the hell is that? If this was universal healthcare with everyone having equal help to pay for doctors, fine, but making me give money to a private company?

Third, NDAA. What the hell is with the law that says he can detain anyone indefinitely just because he "suspects" they are criminals? That may make him a Stalinist of sorts, but he certainly is no Eugene Debs (do right wing hacks even know who he is? )

Fourth: wars. He has so much blood in his hands in Pakistan and Iraq and Libya it isn't even funny. Forget Benghazi, what about him releasing racist terror in Libya?

Libyan rebel ethnic cleansing and lynching of black people « Human rights investigations

Surprise, Surprise...our first "black" president doesn't really care about black people as much as he cares about the military industrial complex.

In no way, shape or form can anything Obama does be called "socialist". Please, stop making us look bad by associating us with the right-wing hack in chief.

I agree.

Obama has done far more to outrage socialists than conservatives. That outrage would be somewhat justified if they thought he was a kindred spirit. No, he is center left, as I am, so I like the guy.

But to conservatives anyone left of Michelle Bachmann is a socialist these days, so it is relative, I guess.

Popular <> right; popular <> sane; popular <> rational.

Once upon a time, it was an extremely popular belief that the sun circled the earth. We had to BBQ a few people who told us otherwise.

Socialism has been tried and failed multiple times. Keep trying the same thing and expect a different result is the definition of insanity.

Meh! The far left and the far right always meet around the back door in agreement. Nothing new.

Admitting you're a socialist is just as bad as someone admitting to being a racist.

Reported.

Social Democracy works

The facts speak for themselves: the percentage of households in poverty fell from 55% in 1995 to 26.4% in 2009. When Chávez was sworn into office unemployment was 15%, in June 2009 it was 7.8%. Compare that to current unemployment figures in Europe.

Need I say more?

And yes, Leninism failed, I agree, but socialism is not necessary Leninism anymore than conservativism is all the same as the "Council of Conservative Citizens" Council of Conservative Citizens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Actually it's been quite successful in many places. The Scandanavian countries come to mind. While I realize their exact model wouldn't work for the US, socialism itself has worked.

But that's not the topic of this thread. The important thing here is that Obama is not a socialist.

Unemployment rate means jack. In a socialist system, unemployment rate is practically zero - everybody is employed by the government.

Poverty level means squat. In a socialist system, everybody is equally poor. Yes, the disparity between the rich and the poor is very small, if you call that a good thing.

Great post.

Obama is a crony corporatist--in other words, a fascist. He's nowhere close to being a socialist.

Socialism is where the government controls the means of production. Fascism is where corporations control the government, and use jack-booted thugs (aka "cops") to enforce their rules.

The USA has been a fascist nation for well over 50 years.
