In the immediate post WW2 years the powers that be, mostly investment bankers and MIC supporters, told President Truman that reinstating the French Indochina Empire they lost to the Japanese was critical in preventing the French Nation from becoming Communist. As a result we bankrolled the French reinvasion of Vietnam, mostly by Foreign Legion soldiers, from 1945 to the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954. Then we effectively took over the war.
Supporting the French instead of aiding the indigenous leaders to repair the depredations of the Japanese occupancy was the first and most egregious error. Continuing the support of a tyrannical Catholic regime over a Buddhist land was even dumber. Eventually and 50,000 dead later, we realized our error in being there in the first place.
Given the more recent events we did not learn one damned thing except war is profitable for a few at the expense of the many. Like that is a new observation.
Stupid argument because the parties switched places in the 60's. Democrats of the 60's and before do not resemble Democrats of today. In fact, Republicans were the "liberals" prior to the 60's. When LBJ sided with the Civil Rights movement, this is when the sides began to flip flop. Republicans became Democrats, vice versa. Don't believe me? Look how the south votes Red now. They are all very Republican. Read a history book and you'll find that during, before and after the civil war they were all democrats. Just another lame attempt to sling mud at "liberals". Don't fix anything guys, just keep throwing out labels and insults while our government complete's is police state agenda.
