First let me say, if you knowingly provide inappropriate materials to children, I think you should be locked up. We had a discussion tonight with my nephew and my brother about how a filter placed on his computer and how it is going to block many sites (for my nephew). Reading some of the vocal parents about how it is everyone elses fault their kids are accessing adult chat rooms and adult websites I have to ask if we are taking the wrong approach.
It is 2013. Instead of blaming others for YOU being bad parents, why not put filters on your computers like my brother did (I helped)? I would also like to propose a law to help with it. If you are a parent and your kid accesses adult website and your computer has no filter, you...the parent should be charged criminally. This is just one instance, where I have seen parents today blame others, when they should blame themselves.

How does a carseat law prevent a child from getting hurt in a crash? A filter prevents the child from having access to adult material on the web. Many of these parents are outraged at the adults in adult chatrooms when their kids hit the "18 and above" buttom on the website. They blame everyone but themselves for putting the filters on the computers that would PREVENT the child from having access in the first place.

My point is none of these laws do a single darn positive thing.
A law to require filters would not stop a child from accessing online pornography, just as gun laws do not prevent criminals from accessing guns.
Some laws are bad - and some are just inherently ineffective.
Actually federal law says it is a crime (I looked at all this when we were talking about it). The key is "knowingly". It is common sense that if you allow your kids on the web, without a filter, you are more at fault than anyone. Listen, could understand YEARS ago when these filters were not an option? Sure. That is not the case today.
If you allow your kid on the computer, that kids goes into porn and you do not have the filter to prevent it, you are at fault. You as a parent did not take the steps to ensure your kid was protected...but why blame yourself when you can blame others?

As someone who is for smaller government, I agree with you in the context you are talking about. The whole point I am getting to, is we are living a country where the parents (bad ones), find it easier to blame others. If you kids is accessing adult content, you do not have a filter. If that is the case, YOU as the parent are at fault.
