Why is it that many people outside the U.S. think that us Americans only gets 2 weeks vacation a year only? Virtually all White-collar workers gets at least 3 weeks paid vacation + public holidays. Some workers in the U.S. may get more vacation time than most Europeans after working several years. Yes, some low skilled workers may get only 2 weeks off, but that's not the majority. All full-time blue-collar workers I know of, including full-time retail workers gets 3-4 weeks off.

Just because the government does not mandate any paid vacation does not mean people do not get any days off.

My mother works as part-time bank teller, and she gets 3 weeks paid vacation + 12 holidays.

The media says so, who are we to argue?

Are you serious? At my office (doctor's office), one gets two weeks vacay to start, then it goes up to three after I think 2-3 years. We only get about 8 holidays. It is really hard for us to be closed for even a long weekend.

I get 3 weeks, plus 11 holidays. My godson just started at a multi-billion dollar corp headquarted near me. First full year = 3 weeks vacation, 10 holidays chosen by corp, plus 3 floating holidays.

I think a lot of foreigners confuse starting vacation with accrued vacation after several years of employment. That's where the myth comes from, I think

My vacation doesn't even come in weeks; it comes in days. You just choose when to use them. I get 18 vacation days, 10 holidays, and 4 floating days. My previous job however, I only got two weeks vacation, and most of the time I couldn't even use it all at once. I guess it all depends on the company.

I get 25 paid time off days / year plus around 10 holidays off. Had a full month off for paternity leave when my kids were born too, on top of vacation days. All without unions.

People starting out at my job (skilled trades) start with 5 days vacation and no sick time. The vacation increases by 3 days for every 5 years of service. I've never worked for a company that offers more that 2 weeks.

There's a lot of variation out there when it comes to benefits.
