Yes, make your opinion known to these non-profits and the businesses that take on employees who will be paid below minimum wage. If enough publicity is made and there is sufficient public shaming, it will change.
As someone who knows the retail industry, it stinks from head to tail for most workers, and that goes for businesses well beyond the popular target, Walmart.
This is a non-profit.
In fact, for some that cannot afford to pay for day services (day care for special needs), it costs us $600 a month out of pocket after disabiliity benefits.
So, they drop them off at goodwill where they do what they can to pitch in, make $10 and you pick them up after work.
P.S. THEY START TO LOSE THEIR DISABILITY IF THEY WORK TOO MUCH. Again, we are talking about the vastly most disabled to be paid < minimum. Only 13% of the disabled that goodwill employs.
sure , they should 'upskill' , 'start their own businesses' or better still, 'pull themselves up by their bootstaps'.
it's their own fault you see, because they should have planned ahead.
aka: Conservative dogma at its finest.
Your socialist utopia would have cut the brain stem on most of these disabled at birth for the betterment of the fatherland. In case you didn't notice, the aid and opportunity for these disabled are SOCIALIST and they are recieving govt. $$$ and getting a chance to socialize, make some $$$, get skills or whatever by this non-profit organization.
3. They are all receiving disablity incomes from the govt. This money is supplemental to that.
And when this is true it is very limited how much they can make before losing benefits. Right now it's $1,690 for the blind and $1,010 for non blind per month.
That's actually kind of generous for the blind.
Severely disabled with little assets would qualify for SSDI and SSI. That and some pocket money from these jobs.

Great post.
People also don't seem to realize that just like you and I....sitting around the house is not helping their social, communication and other skills. If they can at least hang out and move some boxes around for a buck an hour, thats HUGELY better and also gives the caretaker a break as well.
I hope some of the earlier posters are learning something.
In Sparta, there was little choice in the matter. Newborns were seen as the property of the state and all babies were inspected by a community leader. If the child showed signs of deformity or ill-health, the parents were ordered to expose it.
Many parents in ancient Greeks would also expose their newborns because of sickness, financial pressure, or simply for being the 'wrong' sex in the male-dominated society.
Many religions had did not raise moral objects to infanticide, although Christianity and Islam notably rejected it.
Leaving the child to the elements was the preferred method to 'dispose' of the child, because it meant the child died of natural causes, which was a more 'moral' death than directly killing the child.
WTF. Pardon my French. This makes me extremely angry. After reading this, I dont know what to do but to just to post this on CD forum.
Please read it. I want people to know what Goodwill has done to these people.
I had a friend who worked for Goodwill in a training program for disabled people and she made $11-$14/ hour
One other poster alluded to the fact that people on disability (which the Goodwill workers are) have to keep under the income limitation for continuing entitlement to Title II and XVI benefits. Indeed, for SSI benefits they also have to meet the resource limitations (which are low indeed).
It may be that those (in the linked article) who are making less than minimum wage are doing so simply so they do not lose their disability benefits, as well as attendant Medicare (Title II) or Medicaid (Title XVI) benefits.
I hate to see a charity that actually works with the disabled portrayed as greedy CEO's preying upon the weak because of some crap news organization pushing an agenda.
OP, you've been had. If you want to write a nasty letter....do it to the writer of the article.
I worked with the severely mentally and emotionally impaired for many years and also drove rural transportation that provided the rides to and from work for these individuals. The post below is exactly right and the outrage at what is happening here is stupid beyond belief

2. If a regular worker can make 10 widgets a day and bob can only make 2 widgets a day and makes $1 an hour, you'd prefer he'd make $5 and hour. What happens when bob can only make a widget every week as his disabilities worsen?

So what you guys are so upset about are people whom are virtually unemployable and unable to work even basic jobs very well, whom no one else will employ are able to get out of the house, socialize and contribute to the extent of their disabilities.....but you want them to be artificially paid the same as all the people around them.
Goodwill is providing a societal benefit, I would urge you to stop and think about it.
P.S. If you don't want to take my word for it, contact some of the local groups that work with special needs and disabled adults etc. and listen to what they have to say. My buddy is heavily involved in this and I too have a special needs kid as well.
