Guzman, who has 13 years experience with the force, was on the switchboard at 24th Precinct station house on West 100th Street when she got into trouble. 'It was just natural,' Guzman said, recalling a short conversation with a fellow officer. 'She walked by. She was going to get coffee. She said something. I responded (in Spanish). That was it.' ...The NYPD explained their English-only policy on Sunday. 'We're a 24/7 operation,' said NYPD Inspector Kim Royster, told the Daily News. 'We should be speaking one voice, which is English.' According to the Daily News, an NYPD internal newsletter from 2009 states that officers must 'speak English while they are conducting business for the department unless speaking a foreign language is a necessary component to performing their duties and responsibilities.'...National Latino Officers Association Director Anthony Miranda told the paper that he is worried that the rule could be used to single out minority group officers that supervisors don't like.
The rules were to speak English. If they can't follow orders they should be fired.

If you have a very simple procedural rule like, everyone's boots must be polished, everyone must wear a tie, etc. Then I can understand wanting to enforce them, but saying that they should be fired for breaking the rule by using one sentence seems wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy over-reacting

I mean at the very very very maximum you make a note of it in their personal record and tell them not to do it again. Its seems too much to take it any higher.

Welcome to the new right wing nation. Speak Spanish over a cup of coffee and you're fired. That's it. No pension, no health care, no job. You're out in the street on your ass. It's really sad that many on this board can't wait for the day when speaking spanish, looking spanish or having a spanish name is grounds for firing and social ostracization. Maybe put them all on reservations like with the NDNs?
One nation, one color, one language and everybody armed to the teeth. What a bleak future we face if the right wing conservative faction ever gain power over the nation.
All American my ass. Should change that handle to All White European American Only.
