These folks scream about children starving then turn around and want to raise food prices to starve these same children. Only the mind of a liberal can work this way.

"There may be an economic cure for the nation’s obesity: Hike the price of food. Raising the price of a calorie for home consumption by 10 percent might lower the percentage of body fat in youths about 8 or 9 percent, according to new research from the National Bureau of Economic Research.

“An increase in the price of a calorie regardless of its source would improve obesity outcomes,” according to a working paper that three researchers prepared for the private, nonprofit bureau.
As the nation confronts an epidemic of flab, many experts have pointed a finger at low food prices as a cause, leading to proposals for taxes on sugary drinks, fast-food and junk food, as well as reductions in government farm subsidies.

How to curb obesity: Tax calories, study says - The Washington Post

i imagine that'd be insanely complicated to calculate, though.

It's not. We do the same for alcohol and cigarettes. This is a national crisis. The tea partiers who think this is just a matter of personal responsibility have no idea of the implications of an entire nation that is obese. It's about personal responsibility if it's just a small subsection of the population, but at our level? Action MUST be taken. I do support an extra sales tax hike on ALL food that is pre-packaged and prepared in advance, similar to alcohol and cigarette taxes, and make fresh food completely tax free

Considering that we already have a bloated, high-regulation farm bill that's supported by conservatives, I don't understand why we need to be taxing anything.

Just end subsidies for sugar, corn, and maybe wheat, and you've taken care of half the problem right there. Then, maybe, you can create ag subsidies for fresh vegetables.

In addition -- we have a food stamp program that lets indigent moms buy Pepsi and Cheetos. That's another simple fix: further restrict what you can purchase with SNAP.

It would work ONLY if the tax is then used to subsidize healthier foods. A significant portion of the obese live in poverty and they can only afford high calorie, low nutrition junk food. Furthermore there are some high calorie foods (nuts, fatty fish) that are good for you in moderation.

One of you need to get on the horn with crazy Joe Biden. He thinks rasing the min wage will make it just fine for folks to afford food but in reality the government is just going to steal that wage hike when all is said and done............

“Think about all it means to a middle-class family. An increase would cover all that they are now spending on groceries – just this increase. If we increase the minimum wage to just what we’re talking about, all the money you spend in a year on groceries, will be equal to that increase. It’s like getting a free year of groceries,” Biden said.

80% of the farm bill is SNAP.

Restricting SNAP won't generate revenue though.
