That is not true at all. The military is a burden, not an economic benefit. If all you want is jobs, we could hire people to go around the land breaking windows. That would create thousands of jobs just like military spending does.
Not just Americans have to decide. Brits also have to decide, are they with Europe or the US, with the current differences one can't be on both sides, frankly. Britain is more and more considered a Trojan horse of the US over here. They should be kicked out of the EU asap.
We should be more like the Germans when it comes to balancing security vs. liberty.

I always have to laugh at Americans who say that America is the freest country in the world? Lol, how are you kidding? Europeans have more freedom than us overall. Just because shouting ni**** in most EU countries would land you a jail sentence or a fine doesn't mean it's a police state over there. Fact of the matter is, Americans have an infantile sense of what freedom is. But, thankfully, at least the OP looks like he gets it

It is true. Without our affiliation with NATO and the US, Europeans would be way safer. I trust the Russians and the Chinese more than I trust the Americans these days, to be quite honest.
Germany does virtually nothing to provide for its defense and nothing to ensure security around the globe.
As for the first, it has been less than 2 years since every German able-bodied male put their life on standby for a year or so while they trained with arms in the Bundeswehr. For five decades after WWII, they knew their country was designated as the spot where the Warsaw Pact and NATO would slug it out, and they - unlike, I might add, the US - had living memories of what it's like to have a war where you live. (Hint: It sucks.) They still built their Leopard tanks and their Marder ICVs, opened their country for US and UK bases and dealt with the fact that half their country was occupied.
As for security round the globe, well - they learned a harsh lesson on the entire "Let's go overseas to fight, the boys will be home by Christmas", and they took it to heart. The enormity of the decision to offer to invoke Article V after 9/11 is hard to fathom if you're not following German politics.

What is it about people who worship all things European?
