If the cause/issue is just, I care. I donated to an autism research fund yesterday simply because I believe it is a just issue. I also support women's right to abortion even though I'll never be in that situation.

I make donations all the time, but I don't consider that an "issue." it's a "cause."
Yes. We don't live in a vacuum, and we are all part of the human experience. To me, it's akin to having empathy for another human being even if their issue doesn't directly impact me.
Let's just say I vote on economic issues. When not voting 3rd party this means Republican despite the fact I tend to agree with Democrats on social issues.

you don't live in a vacuum, but don't tell me where I can or can't live.
Abortion then. Legalization of hard drugs. Improving the conditions of some of our worst neighborhoods.
unless I live in the neighborhood, I don't care. if I agree with a candidate on the majority of things, his/her view on abortion would mean nothing to me. I think drugs should be legal, but I don't do drugs, so it's not an important issue. however, incarceration of drug users/dealers costs US tax payers billions of dollars a year. so this is a monetary issue that does affect you.
Yes, absolutely. As most people who've read my posts here know, I'm very passionate about supporting marriage equality - and I'm not gay, nor do I strongly care about getting married to anyone. The fact that gay couples can now marry in my state affects me in no way directly, unless I get invited to a wedding and have to buy a new dress.
I also care about children's rights and protection issues, even though I don't have (and probably won't have) children of my own... and with certain issues affecting minority groups of which I'm not a part, I have even dedicated aspects of my career to helping in those areas. You can live in a vacuum if you so desire, but I choose to follow my mother's famous line: "You are NOT an independent satellite." Wise words, imo.

actually, the federal benefits gays are looking for will cost tax dollars. this does affect you, and in essence, you are voting against your financial interests. it would be like voting for an increase in property taxes to go to educate children you don't have.
