If you cut the federal government out of it, would you consider a more liberal policy on the state or county/city level? For example, more funding for schools, public health centers, food assistance programs paid for with tax money, etc?

Regarding morality issues like abortion and gay marriage, if given the choice between 1) letting the states handle the issue as they choose or 2) getting your way at the national level, which would you choose?

Thanks!

It is too late to turn back the clock and we are stuck with the almighty federal gvt. I am in support of the states choosing their own destiny and living with the consequences. If a state wanted to be liberal I would support that but I would not want to live there.

I agree that the States should make their own policies in these areas and live with the consequences of their decisions... If I lived in a liberal state, I would also move to a conservative state... Fortunately in my state, even the liberals are somewhat conservative.

I support local governments being run however the electorate sees fit. If a town in NV wants to legalize prostitution, have at it. If Austin wants to put restrictions on use of plastic grocery bags in stores, do it. If a rural county in TN decides to have almost no services because the voters don't want to pay for it, that's fine too.

People can choose to move to where the restrictions and services match their personal needs. Or they can campaign on the local level to try to get the restrictions and services they don't like changed.

I just believe it needs to be done on local/state level rather than by the federal government.

I am a states rights supporter, so I support a states right to become as liberal as its people choose. If New England wants to allow gay marriage, that is their choice. If they want many social programs and they pay for it themselves then that is their choice. As a conservative I would try to move away from a state like that if I lived in it. Our founding fathers wisely included the 10th amendment to the bill of rights as to allow such a diverse country to survive without state vs state conflict. No one in Massachusetts should be able to force gay marriage on Tennessee, nor should no one in Tennessee be able to prohibit it in Massachusetts. An issue like that is clearly the domain of the states according to the constitution. The consequences of neglecting the constitution and using federal power to force the will of more populous and influencial states upon those with less influence has been played out once before in this nation. Open a history book and read all about it, its called the civil war. Northern forces trampled the constitution as they sent their invasion force upon the people of the south in order to force their will upon them. The rights of states must be respected today or we risk future division, or even civil war. As a conservative American that means I must tolerate places like Massachusetts being as socialist and liberal as they choose to be. I whole heartedly support their right to do it as well.

I believe in states rights. But the states abrogate that right by taking federal money.

The federal government takes money from the states or, if you prefer, we the people.

They then give it back.

In other words, the states do not take money from the feds.
