Virginia ABC buys a $750,000 ‘state-of-the-art field support vehicle’ amid school budget shortfalls
Charlottesville Newsplex reports that Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) recently purchased a $750,000 “state-of-the-art field support vehicle“
with asset forfeiture funds. Whatever the wisdom of the purchase, it is curious that Virginia ABC has $750,000 in asset forfeiture funds to buy such a vehicle. In Virginia, forfeiture proceeds are constitutionally directed to Virginia’s Literary Fund unless the forfeitures somehow involve controlled substances—and controlled substance enforcement seemingly falls outside the purview of the ABC. [Virginia codedoes not include alcohol and tobacco as controlled substances.]

“This is a game-changer for us,” says Shawn Walker, director of the Bureau of Law Enforcement for Virginia ABC. “It will give us the benefit of enhanced communications, more centralized operational efficiency and a very visible ABC law enforcement presence at highly populated events.”

In other words they'll be more efficient at targeting and subsequently arresting people.
Wanna bet it'll be some prisoner (doing time for a minor drug charge) that will be cleaning that beast twice a week?
Handcuffs that can inject and shock a prisoner. Why would an already handcuffed prisoner need to be shocked? This little device won't be abused, don't worry about it.
It has been said that the company town model is what influenced the powers that be to make the entire United States patrolled by police, even in country and remote areas, as is the case today.
The bottom line is, arresting people for victimless crimes is tyranny, it is not warranted by the constitutional law of the republic of The United States of America, it does not function to prevent any violent crime or crime with victims, the drug war does not help anyone, and the era of time in which the people of the US were most free, proves that this is the formula for prosperity. Even given the vastly different technology and capabilities of today, it would seem that this formula of freedom for prosperity would add up. The police are not warranted to do what they do today, search through anything for any reason, monitor everything, the NSA has no right to record everything everyone does, and this whole entire system is unwarranted. - Cassius Methyl
An Alcohol Beverage Control RV is probably not the best example of "militarization". There are other examples out there that we can discuss, but this one, not so much.
While I regret the militarization of police forces (although it seems a logical consequence of a society so insistent on making sure firearms are easily available), that vehicle seems to be more focused on communication and coordination, not necessarily a bad thing. However, not necessarily a well-spent 750K, either...
One has to wonder what the ABC needs with such toys, nm the strange funding. Wonder what it is equipped with. You can clearly see satellite dish.
Looks like revenue to me. Maybe they will rent it out to other localities, as well.

Before the Gun Control Act of 1968, you could walk into any sporting goods store and buy a gun with no background check or paperwork. You could buy a gun through mail order.
Ironically the militarization of police arguably can be traced to 1967, when Chief Darryl Gates of LAPD formed a SWAT team. So historically speaking, you've got it exactly backwards. As we've passed more gun control legislation, police have become more militarized, not less.

They use them for on-site processing at large events where there's likey to be underage drinking, sporting events, concerts etc.. The advantage of an on-site processing unit is that you don't have to run all of the violators back to the station for processing, you can process, cite and release on scene. They typically have rows of telephones, computers, intoxylizers, TV screens and so on inside.
