What? You are against people making a decent living?
The better question is why aren't people who earn the minimum wage more inclined to enter fields in which they could earn far more than the minimum wage?
7.75 is 52% of 15 dollars. You just said prices only rise by an average of about 35%. That means Australians are still taking home about 13% more than Americans even with higher cost.
so to put it simply, you are talking about a 48% raise for only a 35% jump in prices. If your argument about cost rising along with minimum wage, it should be 48% and 48%.
the big take ways is Australians still take home more.
But everyone in Australia pays the higher prices so the minimum wage earners can get by without actually having to develop a marketable job skill.
Wouldn't the better solution be to teach low-skilled workers a trade?
I make more than four times the minimum wage because I have a skill.
Lots of other people without college degrees earn the same or more than I do.

While I've often wondered the same thing, the reality is that this country needs low wage earners to keep life convenient. The gas station attendants, sandwich guys, waitresses, cashiers, etc. all make life better for those of us who can afford to use them, so why not pay them a little bit closer to a livable wage? Somebody has to make my iced coffee in the morning, after all .
Haha. Are you reading at all. As you raise the MW, prices go higher. So, if you raise them more, prices go up more!

Prices may go up slightly, but the prices don't raise so much as to out do the increased spending power. There are also ways to reduce the effects of prices going up...cost saving techniques, slightly decreased work hours, less waste, less regulation, smaller bonuses for those with such a higher pay grade, etc.
More, whining because someone else makes more than I do. What... Do you think the CEOs just bang a gavel like a judge and make their own salary?

Well...they sort of do. The CEOs are in control of almost all functions of the company. They are basically promised a certain amount of money. Have you seen the kinds of bonuses that companies are giving their CEOS lately? You can toss a couple billion down the drain and do a lot of damage to your company, but you'll still take home a lovely extra million and a half bonus than you did last year.

I understand your feelings here, but the problem with a living wage is ...who determines what that amount is? Is it a living wage for CA or AR or should it be percentage based? Also, why should companies pay more than they have to?

If the company is willing to pay someone at that level, why shouldn't they. Its always the CEOs that get the bad wrap. What about very high pay for players of the NFL and NBA? Although, some backlash is stated occasionally, their pay levels are generally seen as OK.

You will never convince some of the posters, raising the min wage just increases costs, so the buying power stays the same. I don't know why they can't understand this...
Mattee: ok, lets raise the min wage a $ an hour, which is $8.00 a day, if your work full time. Most people working for min wage do not work full time. Let's say, after taxes that $8.00 is decreased to about $5.00. Now, the grocery store raises prices on everything a few cents, the fast food restaurants adds .50 to a burger and the utility company increases the price by $20.00 a month to cover the added costs. Plus the worker making a little more than min wage now has to be given a raise, so he/she is still making more than the entre level person is making. How is that going to help anyone?
