I think they need to put some restrictions/limits on the subsidies to farmers so that the money goes to actual farmers, not folks who own farms but don't live there and is not their primary source of income.

Another instance of the GOP taking from the poor in order to free up money for the rich.

Virtually none of the subsidies go to what you imagine when you think of a farmer. Almost all of it is swallowed up by Big Ag, factory farms, etc.

Under 4% of 'agribusinesses' take over 75% of the farm bill subsidies (pretty standard for corporate America economic policy).

That's silly - you really think that Food Stamps and Farm Subsidies will go away if they are not combined? Not a chance. What will happen is a closer look at both programs to reform them. There is plenty of abuse in these MASSIVE programs that need some reform.

Time to start cleaning house and let in a little sunshine.

If you think the blank checks going out to the oligarchs will be reformed before every last cent going to the poor, you havent been paying attention.

So? There are still food stamps. It's time to dump the able bodied off these programs and focus on the true needy. One out of seven people on food stamps is too many and it's time to turn things around.

Sure they can. Two separate programs funded under one bill.

Subsidies for corn, cotton, etc. and paying crop insurance premiums has no direct connection to EBT cards getting loaded with money every month to go food shopping at the supermarket.

The national lunch program money goes to one of 3 big food processors who deliver prepared meals to the schools. They get the money and buy direct themselves.

Follow the money. Connected wealthy individuals, and big Ag companies all get their cut.

Recent figures had it at one out of five, children being the highest demographic.

I suspect the majority also have the more expensive cell phones, cable television and a lot of luxuries they could give up.

You don't understand how us taxpayers have to cut back in other areas when taxes are raised. Some of us have never taken our kids to Disneyland, we don't have iPhones but the cheaper pre-paids. For taxpayers every tax hike means we tighten our belts in some way, very often at the grocery store.

I must agree with this. Coming from the agrarian rural South, I know plenty of farmers. It's a hard living and one which gets harder each year. If we're going to protect farmers, I think we should concentrate on those family owned farms that genuinely need the help vice the large agribusiness operations that are responsible for the devastation of the family farm.

It's time to start cutting back on these welfare handouts, let people get some kind of work ethic.
The system wouldn't let me rep you again, Malamute! This is such a great post. Thank you.
