Culture= music, art, writing, culinary customs, dress, and those other attributes of a particular people or region. In our country we have a "commonality culture" composed of all things TV, that's to say TV has the most influence on America, way more than religion or ethnic customs. Go to the malls and see the new arrivals gasping over the sheer amount of "stuff" that has become a ho-hum part of our consumerist society. The children of these new arrivals quickly pick up on the newest fads and thus become "full American's" in a very short time.
When I see the obvious new arrivals from Asia or India I'm always wondering how they size up this nation with regard to our customs. It's obvious to most of us who've been here a long time that our "culture" is really a composite of pop culture emulation, having a public "image" seems to be very popular these days complete with the proliferation of tattoos and other persona badges commonly worn by so called celebrities. Sports, another huge American icon is certainly near the top of the pile when we think of celebrity worship. Gone are the days when we celebrated those who made real contributions to society, our new heroes are from the big screen or the sports arenas. I am glad that a certain portion of our heritage from the various Euro nations has been salvaged, Blue grass music, Celtic dancing, and then we have our own homegrown Jazz and Blues that differentiate this nation from all others.
Pop culture isn't just an American thing, most of the developed world now embraces a culture of self indulgence that mirrors the TV mentality of mindless consumption and a never ending need to be entertained. I don't know that all this hyper-consuming way of life will last forever, it's part of a relatively new (100 years) wave of resource wasting that probably has seen it's best days gone by, now we'll have to figure the path to our future with less and less natural resources and that will have a huge impact on America as well as the other industrialized nations..
Excellent post. I still think Europe is ahead of us in terms of embracing real culture though.
Multi culturism and respecting all these 3rd world cesspool cultures will be the death of America. America was at its peak when the WWII generation came of age. No way the country could pull together like they did to win that war. Now half would argue that we deserved Pearl Harbor because we were racist against a Japanese in 1848 or some bs. We would lose a war like that today without a doubt.
