Those with the agenda that I spoke of call Patriotism towards our country which is a good thing as being Nativist a negative thing. They want to change the demographics, identifying culture and language of our country.
The response to the Zimmerman verdict has revealed America's culture to be broken, so perhaps making some changes would be a good thing.
The very concept of nationalism has been transformed over the past century. The old definition of a nation was defined as a body of people that share a common language, culture and heritage. In the past, countries would be referred to as multi-national if they weren't homogeneous. The Austrian-Hungarian or Russian empires were called countries of many nations. In America, we called Indian tribes nations within America, the Iroquois Nation for example. A nation now is meant to define simply a political boundary. What we call multi-culturalism today was once called multi-nationalism.
In the West, nationalism has lost its meaning because most Western countries have become multi-national. The very idea of nationalism seems strange and awkward when you have a country full of people from so many nations. In the East, most countries are still relatively homogeneous or at least one ethnic group is overwhelmingly dominate like in China.

I think few people are very aware of Japanese history, economic system or culture. Japan is very Nationalistic and always has been - Japanese society is linguistically and culturally homogeneous, composed of 98.5% ethnic Japanese. Very few foreigners live there and they don't really want any - which is going to be a problem for them.
Arguably Japan has just about the right number of foreigners, while Western countries have far too many. Since the beginning of the Meiji era 150 years ago, limited numbers of foreign nationals have been brought in to fill specific roles and provide needed skills. Those who do come generally feel welcomed and appreciated. Isn't this how immigration ought to work?

Scarcity of workers is a good thing. Let me say that again, scarcity of workers is a good thing. It drives up wages, and it leads to technological innovation. It's the main reason why Japan leads the way in factory automation and robotics.
I'd say nationalism is well and alive. Look at the people who say they do not care what happens else where just save the money and spend it on me.The sense of some given right to the worlds wealth that a Chinese peasant who works hard does not have. Liberals are nationalism in that they think they have some natural right to much of the wealth by just existing.
