To answer the OP's question, four words.

Standard curriculum. Standard testing.

Other countries have more generous welfare systems and unions and still manage to run circles around us.

All the money that should be directed into improving quality goes towards salaries and pensions. It's one of the most disgusting aspects of this country.

Yes and when we did track, the education system was stronger and our students performed better. Now, they learn enough to pass the standardized tests and that's all. Frankly, the smart kids are bored in school and while those same kids might have raised our average scores in times past, now they are underperforming, as the system has been set up to encourage them to do so.

At the end of the day, we have to stop thinking every child is equal - they are not. Some are smarter than others and we need to form our educational system around that concept. Plus, if we had the vo-tech system back in place like it used to be (in every high school), then those kids better suited to be HVAC technicians, plumbers, and mechanics could graduate high school with a trade and be ready to enter the workforce. Some of those trades make very good money but all we're doing now for the high school graduates that do not go onto college is preparing them for a career at Walmart, where we all know the money sucks.

Name me one that isn't racially homogenous with a strong family culture and ultra low teen/fatherless births.

The Public Unions in this country are much different in those that you speak about. As well as how schools are run.

Maybe its just me, but the Teachers Union doesnt help much. Teachers get priority over students and dont have to be good at their jobs. Its tough to fire teachers.

I can't. All the other countries are homogenous.

Maybe. I don't know the difference between the teacher's union here and in other countries.

Exactly. I know the problems well I have have several family members who work as teachers and administrators in the school system here in California.

One of the biggest problems is people not taking responsibility for the childrens education and using schools like day care.
