18 year old Sammy Yatim started acting weird on a late night streetcar. He pulled a pocket knife, allegedly exposed himself, and ordered everyone off. He was alone on the streetcar when police arrived. He was inside the streetcar, police were outside. He didn't attack but instead of trying to calm him down one policeman shot him 9 times, then a sergeant rushed in to taser him. He's dead.

But it happened in Canada so that makes it okay. Its only bad if it happens in America.

That was excessive.

The number of shots fired by the cop is in part--if they're trained like American cops--is to shot until the person stops by falling to the ground and no longer moving towards you.

Here's the problem with that tactical philosophy.

Almost everyone--by U.S. law enforcements statistics at least--drops to the ground a few seconds after being hit anywhere on the body by a 9mm, .40 cal, or .45 cal round. Hand, foot, does not matter. They drop after a few seconds. Most at least.

Also, this kid was not even close to these cops, if he had rushed towards them while existing the bus I could understand them shooting him. But the kid was still on the bus. Then to taser the kid?

Since he acted weird and threatened with knife then the police did right thing. He had a knife that could also kill and do harm! He was warned by the police numerous times to drop the knife.... Well good job cops!

Indeed. This forum has done nothing if not teach me the dangers of random knife attacks. In fact, I've come to believe that knives are awfully more dangerous than guns when in the hands of criminals, nutcases or Steven Seagal.

True. It is much more pain getting killed by a knife than getting shot by a gun. Gun shot is fast death, while knife is slower.

Well, that's one way of dealing with bat-chit crazy people. In this country we'd tie up the entire city all day trying to talk the silly SOB out of the dang bus. Progressive, anti-gun Canada seems to have a better handle on the problem.

By the way, it is a street car, not a bus.

The kid was given ample opportunity to comply with orders to " drop the knife " and didn't comply.

At what point do the Monday morning quarterbacks on here expect the cops to walk away and let him attack somebody ?

What I take away from this situation is ....... If a Toronto cop tells you to drop the knife and surrender, do it.

I ;m waiting to see what this 18 year olds blood alcohol level was at the time. Or his drug screen results.

Toronto.
