steven this part is true

Conservatives believe the poor (able) should be taught to pull themselves out of poverty, and not be perpetually enslaved by total reliance on the government for everything except breathing.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he will never starve again.

But if they refuse to help themselves and work then this is true.

We don't cut the programs.

Given that and that is what's been happening over the past 4.5 years, poverty spending by the government has been growing 20% annually. Poverty itself is growing by double digits.

How do we pay for this then if we intend to keep these programs ?
The same way we fund the American war machine, borrow from peter to pay paul.

This figure drops to 4 percent of those with a high school diploma or GED, and 2 percent of those with a college degree.

Only 2 percent of those who are married make federal minimum wage.

Only TWO PERCENT of full time workers make federal minimum wage.

The proportion of hourly paid workers earning the prevailing federal minimum wage or less declined from 5.2 percent in 2011 to 4.7 percent in 2012. This remains well below the figure of 13.4 percent in 1979, when data were first collected on a regular basis.

Characteristics of Minimum Wage Workers: 2012
Your argument is mute, corporations and companies still are not paying a LIVING WAGE.

I do work, thanks.

So, if it's such a great deal, why work?

No one said it was a "fantastic gig." What people HAVE said though, is that poverty is often caused, and perpetuated, by a lifestyle of consistently poor choices. And some people would rather be poor and shove off the responsibility for that situation on others, than make the often difficult RIGHT choices that would effect positive changes in their lives over time.

less access to birth control?

My god, having morals would be a start, no wonder they sing about Ho's in the music industry. The woman don't respect themselves so why would the men. And if there was someone there reminding them to take the FREE pill every day you would still think up some lame excuse.

Liberals and Democrats:
The party of low expectations, the party of excuses, the party of blame everyone else but themselves.

I think your claim that the poor get free housing, free phones and free utilities are dubious. Everyone gets tax-payer paid education, as they should.
Free housing..Section 8
Free phones...Lifeline
Free utilities...several utility assistance programs (HEA, LIHEAP, USF, TRUE, etc)

Yes, the Universal Service Fund not only provides the free cellphone service but helps pay for gas utility bills.
