I'm not going to argue over who is abusing the welfare system and who isn't and who deserves something and who doesn't. The main concern I have is why, in clear plain view does the system penalize and basically attempt to ruin and shame anybody who tries to get back to working. It's like a dark force that jumps out at you.
Wether it's food stamps, welfare, disability benefits or unemployment benefits, it's always the same phenomenon.
Months ago I listened to a tragic story on a radio program of a woman who was on unemployment benefits and struggling to get a job. I don't remember the details but when she was finally able to get a part time job, they cut her benefits down to almost nothing. Then she unexpectedly got laid off and her benefits were lowered permanently or cut off and she was basically SOL. She said she would have been safer just staying on unemployment and not bothering to get that job she had gotten. This woman had been working all her life, and was just trying to survive. The radio host continued on saying it feels like living in the twilight zone, where it's better to not work then it is to work.
The strangest thing about this is, the system has been like this since day one. But when the economy was better nobody noticed it. For the last few years more and more people are noticing how glaring this is. It's like, the people who setup these systems had an agenda, and it worked out nicely.
So why, can a joe schmoe like me see that the system is setup to basically trap anybody who tries to go above it, but elected representatives and politicians can't? Is it about votes? Shame.
The flipside to this is a growing resentment against people who are caught between a rock and a hard place.
There's no incentive and no transition from poverty.
Make $1 more than the limit and they cut everything off.
Welfare programs have expanded and grown to over 83 means tested programs today.
The cost is over $1 trillion dollars (2011) and is growing at 20% per year.
Almost 30% of Americans are in means tested welfare programs.
More p/t jobs are being created at the low end of the job scene (retail, leisure, healthcare).
Hours are less and benefits are slim to none.
You tell me which way this country is headed ?
The "recession" has been over for 4 years now.

It's been this way since day one and nobody notices.
Once you understand that the national media works for the Democrats, and that the Democrats have a vested interest in as many government dependents as possible, then you'll understand why there is no debate about this topic.
