Naomi Klein wrote an interesting article on Ecuador's desire for a military base in the US in exchange for the one the US has in Ecuador. The story has been buried, I suspect, but online sources indicate it has been tossed around for a couple of months.
I don't know about just giving them a base of their own, but I'm sure something could be worked out if they were willing to station some troops at one of our current bases.

Ha ha, now this is funny, an Ecuadorian base near South Beach, I can see it now.
Humor aside, it is yet another thumb in the eye of the United States. There is a growing solidarity movement in Central and South America as they slowly move towards more unified position. When the little man can taunt the big man and the response is to back down, then an empowerment occurs. If this isn't a stick it where the sun don't shine move, I don't know what is.
Keep an eye down south of the border way, they are en embryonic powerhouse in the making. Give them 50 years and they will be competing with the likes of India and Malaysia with a level of sophistication like that of Spain.
The Ecuadorian President said he has very good relations with the US, but this is just want he'd like. Perhaps after years of an inept PAHO, some Pan Latin will emerge and if it does, I wish it to be a positive force, not another storm-trooper set of dictators.

I certainly hope it remains positive as well as it would be one more reason to lessen our need for such extravagant military expenditures. You know, having friendly trading partners and neighbors who want to hang out and play poker on Sat. night.
There has been a global move towards unification in various places that is emerging. Europe is the one most obvious example but I also see this occurring next in Asia for a great many reasons. If for just having unified military presence, unified currency, and a quasi unified people along cultural lines. Only makes sense. South and Central America has quite a few resources needed for an emerging region, most notably petroleum and a growing science field. Of course having the resource of cheap labor also helps to stay competitive on the global market too.
