Sheesh, my wife and I both work for the (state) government, and have in more than one state. We're a family of four and have barely ever been above the poverty line.

Most state workers don't make beans. SOME federal employees do well, but it's a misnomer that government employees make tons of money.

The benefits, however, can be good. But still often costly.

"I reform"?

Change comes from within and starts at the individual. Those who do not want to hear, will not hear.

Most of those "in need of assistance" are really "in need" of helping themselves and stop relying upon government handouts.

Again- Read the Bible verses on lethargy, which is more applicable to the "poor" of today than in the time of Christ. The "poor" in the time of Christ were actually trying to help themselves, unlike the "poor" of today. Today, we have bums, which are more an object of derision, than sympathy, who prefer to live off the largess and benefits of the government and live in sloth. This, of course, is a greater sin in the eyes of God. Liberals, of course, do not understand this, and they never will.

I read that when people don't get enough to eat, their bodies can start storing fat to the extent that they could become heavy, particularly if they're eating unhealthy when they do eat but I don't know...

Well he removed that class from the Bush tax cuts so they are paying more now.
Not true, Grover Norquist saw to that. Every time Congress would vote, the republicans made sure the Grover Norquist gridlock would keep the solidarity for all republicans, otherwise threatening the future campaign, of any republican candidate, determined to keep non-compliant republicans OUT. The tax structure under Clinton worked very well, with a much better economy. You can't have a thriving economy, without a robust middle class. I'm sure you'll sleep well tonight knowing the billionaires, and the multimillionaires not only get away with not paying their fair share, but all their investments are either tax protected, or taxed very mildly. Do you also really believe the rich should remain entitled to tax breaks on all their vacation homes?

Well, looking realistically at the food stamp program, we have had several clients who needed and used food stamps and it is a challenge for our hard working social worrkers to go in and help them find ways to eat. Then our nurses and dieticians go in and find out that the people are so sick because of what they have been eating, or in some cases NOT eating at all.
This is my angle on the issue. We strive to teach people how and where to buy food, encouraging visits to farmer's markets, where lower priced and often fresher produce can be purchased. We show people how they can spend less and get more. We do not ever encourage or if possible, allow anyone on food stamps to drink alcohol or smoke. Most are too sick anyway. We see food stamps as hopefully a temporary measure until we can rehab a person well enough to return to work or , in the case of severe disability, finding ways around food stamp uses. We have good relations with community food banks, and those of us who can afford to, do what we can to keep food on their shelves as we would our own. Most of our severely disabled clients do not get enough in food stamps anyway, and some are too proud to ask for help. I am aware abuses happen in any system, even the most well intended. However, I do not like to see people going hungry and food stamps are a necessary part of the solution for now.

Just saw this...

The Stimulus Bill of 2009 and Obama changed the rules so now childless adults get SNAP benefits for a year no questions asked. They must register every year. That's it.

The work requirements for TANF also got changed due to the recession and lack of jobs.

We're in a depression and government welfare programs have been laxed/expanded.
Of course it's not noticeable..there are no food lines are there ?
People now have EBT cards to swipe or direct deposit for other programs.
You don't see the poverty therefore it doesn't exist..right ?

Yet these programs now cost us over $1 trillion a year and growing at 20% annually.

Doubtful.

This is a very unhappy bunch. They seem completely unwilling to be thankful for any small mercy.
