If you have followed the gun debate over the years you have heard the phrase "guns on the street" dozens if not hundreds of times. It's never quite clear what it means. Does it mean "guns in the hands of private citizens?" Does it mean "guns in the hands of criminals?"

Here's Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel bragging about taking guns 'off the streets.'
PolitiFact | Mayor Rahm Emanuel says Chicago takes more guns off the streets than New York or L.A.

Years ago there was a local debate over whether guns confiscated from criminals should be destroyed, or sold off to licensed gun dealers to provide a revenue source for the county. Then-sheriff Dave Reichert, thru his spokesman declared that if assault weapons were confiscated, he would absolutely not put them back "on the streets." Reichert is now US Rep from the WA 8th CD and supposedly a stalwart pro-gun-rights advocate. The spokesman is now King County sheriff.

The statement then from the sheriff would seem to imply that "guns on the street" equals guns in private hands. Other statements turned up via google seem to imply that it means "guns in criminal hands."

Who knows? It's an interesting example of the capacity of gun control advocates to utter words that sound nice, but have no definite meaning. I ran across this news story in today's Seattle Times. A group of druggies decided to execute a home-invasion on a (apparently) fellow druggie. They tied him up and took guns drugs and money from his open safe. But he broke free from his bonds, and when the dust cleared one of the invaders was dropped off at a 7-11 with a gunshot wound to the face, and another showed up at a local hospital with a gunshot wound to her buttocks.

What interested me about the story was this--as the robbers drove away, they were tossing the guns that they had stolen out of the car, obviously in an effort to dump the evidence before they were arrested. Finally, after all these years, an actual case of "guns on the street" LOL.
