1. It is another example of religion in government.
2. It is considered a form of slavery.
3. It is considered demeaning to women (although there ARE male prostitutes, you never hear of them when the issue comes up!).
4. At the worst, it has the potential to spread disease.
Take your pick, whichever you consider the most likely.

1. Funny, as the Church use to actively promote or at least condone prostitution. Good God fearing woman did not have sex. Whores? That's OK.
2. To me this is the only valid one, at least if the prostitute is under the control of a pimp. If they're operating on their own then it is hardly valid.
3. Same reason number 2 is not always valid. If you are selling yourself how can it be demeaning? Shoveling horse sh*t all day is demeaning too, doesn't make it illegal.
4. This is the reason most laws were enacted in the US. The syphilis and gonorrhea outbreaks of the late 19th century caused many cities and states to start cracking down on brothels and street walkers. Before that it was at least tolerated in most metro areas.
Interestingly it was largely legal in the US until the progressive era (early 20th century). The Mann Act of 1910 proscribed prostitution at the federal level:
Like other proscriptions of the time (drugs, alchohol, etc) it was a progressive initiative and based on racism. The progressives were concerned that prostitution was leading to inter-racial sex, and that could not be allowed. One of the first convictions under the Mann Act was of black boxer Jack Johnson, over his marriage to a white woman named Lucille Cameron. Unforgivable Blackness: Jack Johnson and the Mann Act
Fast forward 100 years and little has changed. Progressive hero Spike Lee gives inter-racial couples a look: "daggers." As planes crashed into the twin towers, the FBI was proudly announcing a prostitution bust in New Orleans: JONATHAN TURLEY

I think you need a #5. Who takes care of the children?

You would think they would be on bc if there were escorts. They could still make slavery and pimping illegal but I am specificly asking why the prostitution itself is illegal.
