All of those things have nothing to do with atheism. Some atheists may possess those qualities; many don't. But being an atheist does not automatically cause a person to take on such qualities.

I also find it very amusing that you talk about atheists being the height of ignorance, then rattle off a bunch of concepts that are either impossible to test or experimentally verify or are just plain meaningless. Spiritual realm? Power behind thoughts? What is that supposed to mean? Immediate gratification? What does that have to do with not believing in any gods? WE don't ask questions or seek answers? What do you think science is all about, then? I guess all of those scientists trying to discover more about the nature of the universe's functioning and its creation are actually just immediately gratifying some other need without depth or purpose, right? What exactly do you mean "believing in something outside themselves"? I believe in the universe and the forces and constants that control it. Is that good enough, or do I need to believe in something from your list of approved concepts?

Some of the things you mention are just plain stupid and uninformed. You will find that many, if not most atheists believe that the universe doesn't revolve around us, that given its size and age, that extra-terrestrial life is likely to exist, and that there are things that we will likely never be able to experimentally verify (i.e. what was the origin of the Big Bang).

Your post reeks of the very ignorance and superiority complexes you decry!

Default Are atheists mentally ill?

You mean, as opposed to those who proclaim an ancient middle eastern creation myth is the answer to everything?

Wow. Talk about projection...

Perhaps you could read what you have written and try practicing a little self-reflection?

What make you believe that "ancients" were stupid? Just because we march forward in time does not mean we are marching towards enlightenment. Just because something is old does not mean it is useless or all myth. Ask yourself - what is creation...what is science..what is evolution? It's an issue of time...The eternity we live in is actually timeless..and whether we go forward or backwards or stand still in time it is all the same.

The "ancients" were just as wise as some of us are today - perhaps more wise and more connected to the ultimate reality? Yes you will find "myth" in the ancient writings- but you will also find grand timeless truth...If you want wisdom you must take it where you find it- Atheists would not bother reading "Proverbs" for instance because they have this prejudice that because it is contained in a bible that it is religious/ Proverbs is simply tried and true logic...to avoid ancient wisdom because you believe it is ALL a myth...is foolish...as they say -

Don't throw out the baby with the bath water-----some religious zealots say "You can not cherry pick your way through the bible - because the whole book is the word of God.....that is foolishness...You must cherry pick and use logic...Some cherries will be sour- some will be rotten- some will be picked apart by birds...and some will be sweet and perfect - \You eat the good cherries and avoid the bad ones- Religion must be approached with logic - no like a blind man who eats all that he touches.

Such a narrow, twisted and distorted view, not to mention self-righteous. One does not need to believe in a god to appreciate and marvel at nature. One does not need to believe in an invisible entity to appreciate the works of Shakespeare, Mozart and the great works of art hanging in the Louvre. One does not need to buy into the countless contradictions in the bible to ponder the works of the great philosophers. One does not need to rely upon fairy tales as unbelievable as Moby Dick to love and adore their family and the very special people in their lives. The spiritual realm that you refer to does not stop and start with the what you percieve as spiritual...

Spirituality can be sought not only through traditional organized religions, but also through movements such as liberalism, feminist theology, and green politics. Spirituality is also now associated with mental health, managing substance abuse, marital functioning, parenting, and coping. It has been suggested that spirituality also leads to finding purpose and meaning in life.

In modern times spirituality has come to mean the internal experience of the individual. It still denotes a process of transformation, but in a context separate from organized religious institutions: Houtman and Aupers suggest that modern spirituality is a blend of humanistic psychology, mystical and esoteric traditions and eastern religions.

Interestingly there are loads of creation myths around the world, and they almost all contradict each other
