I celebrate Christmas. And I'll post it one more time....CHRISTMAS is a national holiday ~ HAPPY HOLIDAYS ain't.....and as long as CHRISTMAS is a holiday that I celebrate and enjoy with my family I'll say Merry Christmas. You, on the other hand, say whatever you like, celebrate or not ~ I don't care. But no one is going to stop me from my happiness of that season

So do I.... but
Do you buy a christmas tree and decorate it. That's pagan. Do you tell your kids about Santa? Or La Befana? Most of the ritual surrounded by Christmas, has very little to do with Christ.

It is the Politically Correct/Incorrect argument of choice in November and December it seems when I turn on the TV or look at news online.
With all of this nonsense going on, my question to Christians who are upset about Christmas being removed from greetings is this. Why is the word Christmas so important to defend? I'm personally much more offended by the massive marketing campaigns, the obligatory gift buying marketing that pounds you from all radios and every store sign, and the excessive food that starts on Thanksgiving and many people choose to pig out all the way through New Year's, especially leading up to Christmas with all the "Christmas treats".
During the time all this happens, a lot of people rack up debt they can barely afford to pay, and add pounds from overeating, all in the name of Christmas. Shouldn't this be more of a concern for Christians to tackle? I would think poor stewardship of money and junking up the body is a much bigger problem for Christians than whether or not the person selling them the excess gifts and food finishes the transaction with a Merry Christmas.
Maybe I'm missing something...

my guess is you are missing the holiday spirit.

The "Happy Holidays" thing is all business driven.
This whole thing is a non-issue.

I used to teach..........we were not allowed to use "Christmas" at my school. It was a "Winter celebration"...a "winter carnival or party". People at walmart used to say merry christmas.....now it is happy holidays. So, it is an issue for some apparently.

No, I don't buy a tree. I decorate my home and office with real evergreen wreaths and trimmings and pine cones and poinsettias and beautiful red foil bows and a manger scene ....
I have two girls who are now grown. When they were little girls they knew that "Santa" wasn't real and that is Mom and Dad who did the delivering of the surprise gifts on Christmas morning, but we had fun playing. The were taught the real story of Christmas although we also had fun, fun, fun.

A Dr. at the hospital where I work wore a button on his shirt last December that stated, "Thank you for wishing me a Merry Christmas."
One of the best MDs. IMO.
It is an issue when schools are no longer allowed to celebrate our Christian Holiday. When I was in school we acknowledged Christmas and the Jewish student in our class also taught us about his religious celebration. It was a nice experience.
I will not allow a business to dictate my speech or greeting. I believe several department stores backed down from their stance when people began boycotting their establishments.

Well, that's not really what I asked. There have been people on this thread talking about lawsuits. I just want to know if anyone has any evidence of one of those ever actually happening.
As for the schools, I get the issue. In a public school, you really shouldn't give primacy to one religion. So, in the spirit of fairness, perhaps Merry Christmas should be joined by Happy Solstice and Happy Hannukah and Happy Solstice and Happy Ramadan (even though it isn't near Christmas this year, but you get the idea) and all the rest. Or you could skip the extra verbiage and issue a general holiday greeting.
At stores, again, it's all about business. These places could say whatever they wanted within reason, but opt for general greeting to maximize revenue. All business.

You're correct. Remember Target turning on a dime after the 2005 season? I do. I refused to shop there and told them so in person at the store always shopped at. They were speechless, literally. Christmas 2006 after all the backlash (thank you Bill O'Reilly) they were back to "Merry Christmas". Thank GOD in this country the majority STILL rules!

The point I was trying to make was I would not be surprised to hear of a parent suing the school for something like that............
