I see jobs as being to politics as location is to real estate. If you can get a job and start climbing the jobs ladder, you can have a nice life. If not you're going to suffer. Here is a good, brief summary of the US job market. A few highlights:

Things are slowly getting a little better. I posted in the Seattle section about a plot of land near where I live that has been vacant since 2007--a plan to build condos on it was jettisoned. The condos are finally going up. But we are still in very bad shape, by US standards over the last 30 years or so.

And the reality is that there are ways to twist things so that numbers shoot up faster - it is just that that tends to lead to numbers shooting down. Slow and steady wins the race.
