Life sentence for murder with the potential for parole, but only after he's old enough to be very unlikely to re-offend?

Yeah I'd say the legal system worked perfectly here.

I say again, westerners tend to make excuses for children. Our society, at least the liberal part of it, hates holding anyone responsible for anything never mind children. We are reaping what we have been sowing for decades and it is going to get worse. Of course it will be denied because there are no "studies" to prove anything, but children watch violent movies, play violent video games and become inured to pain and suffering. Their level of empathy is non-existent. We are in big trouble in this nation.

I think 13 is borderline because that is around the time abstract thought becomes possible. In this case, it looks like the kid did have the capability, making him culpable. In that case, life sounds good to me.
