It's in my local news all the time since I'm in Maryland. Funny how his wife accepted gifts she didn't even tell him about. I blame this on her since his power went to here head lol But kidding aside, he definitely was a rising star in the republican party. He probably would have been a perfect running mate in 2016 but this scandal will always haunt him now.
The key to all this isn't what happens to McDonnell...
The way Virginia is set up, an individual can only serve one 6-year term as governor, no re-election until another person has served in the interim. The GOP candidate for governor is AG Ken Cuchinelli...who is himself implicated in the Star Scientific mess (as well as having some very peculiar ideas about the limits of the law). Not only did KC take stock in Star, he was also supposed to be investigating McDonnell's involvement.
Add to his other troubles being saddled with for Lt. Gov with one of the weirdest possible candidates for any political office in years (including last year's GOP presidential slate), KC isn't looking like a shoo-in for Gov.
Side note: The Lt. Gov of VA and the Gov. candidates do not have a 'slate' in the same way the the President and Vice President do. It is not unheard of for the Gov and the Lt. Gov to be of different parties.

Same here in Texas.
