Assuming you're not a child, a criminal, or a mental case, you can defend yourself even with gun control.

Germany had gun ownership until 1938 with the passage of the 1938 German Weapons Act which disarmed jews.

That's funny because in my home state I cannot defend myself outside of my home. How am I able to defend myself with gun control?

I don't think Saddam Hussein belongs on the list. If I'm not mistaken, AK's were common in Iraq like in most Mid Eastern nations.
