The wussification of America continues. Isn't it wonderful?

“Other kids quit because they can’t keep up,” Gandron told the newspaper, claiming that Weaver “hogs” the contest. Gandron plans to change the rules of the contest to prevent favoring children who read the most books, instead drawing names out of a hat to declare winners.

Yay! Instead of rewarding hard work let's pick a winner at random so nobody's feeling get hurt!

Asked what he thought about a potential change in the rules, Tyler seemed offput. “How would it even be a contest if you just picked a name out of a hat?” he asked.
no kidding.

LOL, he is cute!

I can see how other kids can get discouraged, but tough luck for them. That is too bad that they are not including Tyler.

I do wonder though how many pages he read. When I was a kid, I was also a target for these library summer reading contest due to being a voracious reader so they changed the requirements and instead had a page goal instead of a book goal. A lot of kids will read really easy, kiddie books with only a few pages to wrack up a lot of books on their sheet. Luckily, I read a lot of novels so still would win until I decided I was too old for the contest.

But we had really cool prizes like bikes and gift certificates and not stupid t-shirts. I do think kids are less competitive academically though. It is like they get a prize just for being a kid, which is disheartening IMO and makes kids not work to achieve goals.

Isn't it sad what we are doing to high aptitude kids today ?
Pushing them to the side in our PC quest to "be fair".

This is going on in the schools.
You wonder why you have a generation of young adults that demand "their fair share" ?
They were handed the trophies and prizes, not because they worked harder, but because of PC "fair share" socialistic actions.
They didn't do better than others but they got the prize anyway.

These are the young adults today out there demanding.
And they are old enough to vote.

And their numbers increase with each new graduating class.

Maybe Tiger Woods should step aside and let them pick the PGA winners out of a hat!

If the library is concerned that no other kids can read that many books, then change the nature of the competition to make reading comprehension the goal. Give them all a set (and achievable) number of books to read and see who absorbs the most.

Of course, the risk with that approach is that the same kid will still blow away the competition.
