Personally, I am always, always in favor of seeing exactly what a person (politician, labor leader, health care professional, etc.) has actually said rather than what someone else reports in the news. Too often these days, the "news" is simply someone's interpretation, and that interpretation often comes with their personal bias. For an excellent example, see the post above this one.

This thread is an excellent example of people reading and commenting on someone else's interpretation of the contents of a letter, rather than addressing what is actually in the letter. Whether the contents favor liberals, conservatives, left-handed redheads, or whomever, it is always, always, always best to go with the contents - the primary source - rather than what someone else has said about it.
Oh, dear! Someone didn't read the actual letter. Link provided in original post.

The ILWU President made it clear they are for a single-payer, nationalized healthcare policy and are upset with the AFL-CIO for going along with Obama on the confiscatory tax on their “Cadillac” healthcare plan.

None of the unions want to pay 40% excise tax on their insurance.
While it was a part of Obamacare right from the start, who knows what lawmakers told the unions to get their support.

Congress removed the medical device tax so precedent has been set.
The unions don't want a short term postponement; they don't want this tax period.

In what is being reported as a surprise move, the 40,000 members of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) announced that they have formally ended their association with the AFL-CIO, one of the nation's largest private sector unions. The Longshoremen citied Obamacare and immigration reform as two important causes of their disaffiliation.

Here is what other news sources are saying:

The West Coast longshore union is pulling out of the national AFL-CIO, citing "attacks" in which the umbrella organization's members blatantly cross picket lines at Northwest grain terminals.

Robert "Big Bob" McEllrath, president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, broke the news in a letter obtained by The Oregonian Friday. In the three-page letter sent Thursday, McEllrath told AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka the ILWU would sever its 25-year affiliation with the federation, cutting formal ties because organization members sabotaged dock workers.

But of course now that someone posts about a rift on the left side things, it's important to dig deep for the specifics and find accurate quotes before going off half-cocked and you find the same liberals rushing to provide clarification.

Hypocritical partisanship.

This is one big yawn.

NAFTA proved over a decade ago that you could do anything you want to the unions and their politically entrenched leadership won't do anything about it.

It's a shame to see how far down they have sunk in terms of actually supporting their membership.

Here is the deal. THe unions want a plan that they dont have to pay for and that gives them all the goodies they like.

They found out the plan they got from Obamacare was expensive, taxed the heck out of them and wont give them what they want.

they are mad and are lashing out. Not because they, like conservatives, dont want government intervention. instead they want MORE than the bill gives, but they want their MORE without paying for it.

PS Obamacare was designed to break the system. It was not designed to fix anything. The goal is something so bad that everyone will give up and go for a single payer system.

Did you actually read the letter from the ILWU.

First off the political issues are just a minor part of the issues the ILWU is having with the AFL-CIO. On political issues the ILWU is complaining that the AFL-CIO is being too moderate.

From the letter:

The ILWU has also become increasingly frustrated with the Federation's moderate, overly compromising policy positions on such important matters as immigration, labor law reform, health care reform, and international labor issues.
