Those people are usually worked to a frazzle and paid minimum wage. I'm sure they could use the day off.

I worked. Work in a hospital boiler room. Why shouldn't retail be open for business? This is a time in which many people are at home. Maybe they forgot something they needed for their BBQ? Maybe they need medication? Maybe they want to use this time to get additional school supplies? Maybe they need gas? You honestly think business execs all take this day off work? I use to think execs always took weekends and holidays off. I've seen hospital execs and CEO here working late night and weekends to get the job done. Sure, most probably don't, but not all and probably far more than you realize.

Many many years ago, when I was a young man (I actually was once they tell me) I worked retail. When I worked on a holiday I got paid double time. I would have been pissed if that extra money would have been taken out of my pocket to provide for my family.

Local minimum wage is around $7 an hour, some of my wife's friends report our local Walmart starting pay around $9. That's over 25% above minimum wage. You're the one who said they work for minimum wage and I provide an example that pays no less than 25% above minimum wage.
