If this is true -- and I see no more or less reason to believe this than the various other unsourced claims and silly conspiracy theories floating around -- then it sheds some interesting light on the stories purporting to prove that the "rebels" are the ones who let loose the poison gas.

Remember, Hezbollah is on Assad's side, so they have no reason to make any statements that might lend support to the "rebels."

Intercepted call bolsters Syrian chemical-weapons charge, Germans say | McClatchy

Quote:
According to Der Spiegel, one of the parties in the intercepted phone call was a “high-ranking member of Hezbollah,” the militant Lebanese movement that’s sent fighters to support the Assad government. That Hezbollah member told the Iranian that “Assad had lost his temper and committed a huge mistake by giving the order for the poison gas use," according to the magazine’s account.
The U.S. intelligence assessment reached a similar conclusion, finding that the alleged use of chemical weapons may have been in part because of “the regime’s frustration with its inability to secure large portions of Damascus.”

[...]

The German account goes further than others that have been released recently in providing details of Assad’s state of mind that might have played a role in the motivation for launching a chemical attack, noting that Assad sees himself embroiled “in a crucial battle for Damascus.”

It also said Assad’s forces had used a highly diluted chemical agent in previous attacks on rebels and that the high death count Aug. 21 might have been the result of “errors made in the mixing of the gas” that made it “much more potent than anticipated.”
And if you choose to automatically discount this because it comes from the "MSM" via Germany, then why do you automatically buy what Putin, the Egyptian media, etc., are selling at full face value? How exactly do you know who's telling the truth and who isn't?

I never doubted for a minute that it was Assad (or his brother) that ordered the Sarin Attack - the neighborhood is located in a very strategic place overlooking important roads that Assad needs. The delivery system was manufactured in Syria - none of the rebels control that type of system - they can get the Sarin, but it does them no good without the delivery system when you are talking such a wide spread strike.

Who did it is not really the issue at this point ...... the point is the dithering about the Red Line and the delay in doing anything about it. It's too late now - Assad has moved his weapons and the gas into civilian areas. Any "strike" is going to be hitting civilians and the entire "strike across his bow" business is ridiculous and shows even greater weakness. Obama is in a Box of his own making - the rest of the world understands that and it's certain that our enemies understand that.

On the contrary, that is the only issue. As evidenced by the countless threads here accusing the rebels of doing it.

The rebels have overtaken and appropriated many weapons that were formerly possessed by the Syrian government.

Barring that, Assad is a smart man, do you really believe that the use of chemical weapons here was worth the very real threat of an international military response?

Quite possibly the "government" did use the weapons, but did Assad himself authorize it?

Funny how we had no problem with Iraq using chemical weapons back in the 80's. Beyond that, if Syrian soldiers massacred 1,300 civilians with machetes, presumably that would have been okay as well (Rwanda).

Smart men do not fire on peaceful demonstrators sparking a armed militant response. Smart men find ways to ameliorate the conditions that prevent large segments of their population from rising up against the government.

Throughout history very few dictators have been ignorant men but their intelligence rarely helps them avoided a violent downfall.

Prevent, or allow?

The point remains, international leaders essentially said that use of chemical/biological weapons would elicit a military response. Assad being aware of this would have then question the utility of using chemical weapons if it meant several vastly superior military forces bombing Syria.

Did limited use in this capacity really achieve anything commensurate with the risk of international military involvement?

If the Arab countries what something done about Assad let them go and do it. Same with Israel.

Problem with this whole mess is that Obummer is a wishy washy *****. Problem with wishy washy ***** Presidents is that they can easily be backed into a WAR just to save face.

We do not know who did what but we are going to fix the problem by bombing the hell out of them. The 3 stooges would fit right in on our blundering foreign policy. Of course no body can point to how this is in the national security interest of the U S. Mark my words this will turn out too be a huge cluster f***.
