His Democrat colleagues in Congress elected Joe Lieberman to a leadership position (Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs), even after he endorsed a Republican for POTUS, and even after he left the Democratic Party.

Gerrymandering as eliminated the moderates. It's sad but true but the good news is eliminating gerrymandering will result in all the politicians becoming moderates again.
