To be precise, the moral imperative is that they have access to affordable healthcare. Insurance is simply the American way of making that happen, reflecting our hybrid economy.
When exactly did morals come back into vogue? Was it just for this particular law?
The term "moral imperative" sounds a whole lot like "military intelligence".
I am glad you are so wealthy that you can afford a $100,000 bypass operation and payout-of-pocket. The vast number of Americans aren't in that position and therefore need insurance.
That's us. We pay as we go. The most we've ever paid in a year for our family of four is, maybe, $2000-2500. Now, why on earth would I want to subject myself to hundreds of dollars a month to give an insurance company and then be stuck for thousands of dollars of co-pay before I saw any benefits???
We are able to pay pretty much any medical costs ourselves including a catastrophic illness. So why force me to join this government/insurance company racket?
The whole thing stinks and the leftwing loons supporting it don't have a clue what they're talking about. I've never seen such absolute stupidity as demonstrated by them on this forum. Absolute morons.
Name calling is done by those that are uneducated on the issue. Many of those who are on the right, middle and left make it a point to learn about what they are arguing, not depending on Rush Limbaugh or Fox news, as it appears the far right do.
You are very fortunate to be able to cover anything that comes your way. Unfortunately, especially since the recession, there are far more unable to have this luxury. I know many elderly couples who have had to take their meds every other month as they cannot afford both of them each month. I also know people that pay more than $2,000 a month on medication alone. I know this because I have been a nurse for over 35 years, and have seen the full spectrum of financially secure/insecure patients. Once again, it appears you and your family are very lucky.
Absolutely! As well as those on the verge of becoming homeless. The lack of health ins. is what has put some families on the street.
The lack of jobs (full or part time) has put more on the streets than healthcare. I guess if you look hard enough you could find some way to spin the lack of healthcare to fit any bad situation.

"Homelessness is, in fact, caused by tragic life occurrences like the loss of loved ones, job loss, domestic violence, divorce and family disputes. Other impairments such as depression, untreated mental illness, post traumatic stress disorder, and physical disabilities are also responsible for a large portion of the homeless." (HomeAid)
I am not trying to spin anything. I just want to see healthcare coverage as something no one needs to worry about.

Moral imperative?
What happened to the liberal dictum that "you can't legislate morality"?

But nowhere is it shown that lack of healthcare coverage "puts people on the street" as you allege. Obamacare won't remove one's need to worry about healthcare. No, all it does is change what one needs to worry about.

"Inadequate health insurance is itself a cause for homelessness. Many people without health insurance have low incomes and do not have the resources to pay for health services on their own. A serious injury or illness in the family could result in insurmountable expenses for hospitalizations, tests, and treatment. For many, this forces a choice between hospital bills or rent. According to the National Health Care for the Homeless Council (2008), half of all personal bankruptcies in the United States are caused by health problems." (Published by the National Coalition for the Homeless, July 2009) I cannot say it any better. It's important to research your answers before deeming what you "know" as fact.
