How so? Excluding the idiotic pension requirement, how is the post office doing financially?

We've used the PO for years and are generally quite pleased with the service and the people. This has been mostly in smaller POs using PO boxes. We send most of our packages via USPS (except BIG stuff) ...and try to use them to receive most of our Internet ordered stuff (more secure and safe).

The private services cherry pick the package and overnight business. Don't provide Saturday service. Don't have daily stops at nearly every citizen. Don't have registered and certified legal services. Throw packages in the woods (sometimes)...

We like the PO. We do want them to improve their financial performance and continue to modernize services.

And it's a FACT that the post office is not a taxpayer provided service. If so, why would the post office want to raise postage for a letter again?
The USPS also delivers packages for UPS and Fed Ex...

Actually, FedEx, UPS, and DHL deliver to areas where the USPS will not. The USPS only delivers to your door if you live in a town or city (and not even then in some cases). If you live in rural areas the USPS will not deliver to your door, but FedEx, UPS, and DHL will.

I live 1.5 miles from the nearest US Post Office, and 50+ miles from the nearest FedEx office. Yet the USPS will not deliver to my door, and FedEx will. Of course, FedEx is also getting paid considerably more to provide that service.

Most towns and villages in western Alaska do not even have their own ZIP Codes. They must share a ZIP Code with a larger town and travel hundreds of miles in some cases, where there are no roads, to get their mail.

Nevertheless, the USPS is still the cheapest means to send a letter or package anywhere in the US.

Actually, the USPS has a long history of losing money, and lots of it. The USPS is running a $22 billion deficit as of 2011, even with the $3 billion in taxpayer funding provided by Congress every year.

I actually lived in a town in MD that did not have door-to-door mail delivery. You had to go to the post office to pick up your mail.

Yes, FedExp is a possibility but no way could their costs be affordable. And BTW, Alaska is far and away an outlier.

Believe me, the post office is the cheapest alternative. we have looked at every possibility, our customers insist on the cheapest delivery method. A few will pay but the majority will not.

"Affordable" is an ambiguous term and will vary from individual to individual. Are you saying Alaska does not deserve the same government services that every other State has? The last time I checked the Fourteenth Amendment did not exclude Alaska, or any other State, from equal treatment under the law. That is such a stereotypical liberal mindset - "I got mine, screw everyone else."
