The myth that this is a Christian nation is just that a myth. Its one put forward by the far right evangelical fundies that are on the fence of crazy and off balance. Franklin and Jefferson were Deists, that is just a fact. Jefferson wrote the Jefferson bible that took out all the miracles because he felt it made the book unbelievable. Paine wrote things like "If Thomas[the apostle] had to stick his finger in the wound or Christ after witnessing all the miracles to believe, then how much more so should I who have witnessed nothing question the very existence of god. No, this is not a nation built on the footings of crazy Jesus freaks. When Jesus freaks ruled they burnt women at the stake and crushed men under rocks looking for demons and witches.

It is not myth when most Americans identify with the Christian faith, and EVERY SINGLE State Constitution mentions God, the Creator.

The Christianity of the founders is not the Christianity of today. Fundamentalism wasn't invented yet. And many founders questioned things like Jesus' divinity (Franklin, Madison, Jefferson, and Washington to name a few).

Religious Affiliation of U.S. Founding Fathers

Episcopalian/Anglican 54.7%
Presbyterian 18.6%
Congregationalist 16.8%
Quaker 4.3%
Dutch Reformed/German Reformed 3.7%
Lutheran 3.1%
Catholic 1.9%
Huguenot 1.9%
Unitarian 1.9%
Methodist 1.2%
Calvinist 0.6%
I have seen that list too, and it is inaccurate. it lumps both jefferson and madison into the first category. deism isn't considered a religion.

Some people consider him a Founding Father. Some don't.

Unofficially America is a Christian nation. Let's look at how an unofficial Christian nation performs. Money, 99% of all the wealth in America is held by he top 1%. Jobs have been outsourced in the name of profit leaving many Americans without any way to support themselves. America now is the leader in number of prison, people incarcerated, and repeat offends. America accepts homosexuals and even allows them to marry in many cases. A large number of America's are against abortion, but isn't the root cause of needing an abortion fornication, and isn't fornication a sin too? America leads the world in murders. Good old Americans leading the pack in killing just like God. 400,000 murders in the US since 1968 and that's more lives lost than in all the wars and conflicts combined. Then we have Iraq, America attacked Iraq in the first preemptive war under the guise of WMD's that were never found. The price was over 1,000,000 Iraqis dead, oh well, they were mostly Muslims anyway, and about 8,000 Americans dead not to mention the crippled and disabled. Today we have a Judge Dredd as president. He serves as judge, jury, and executioner on American citizens he deems a danger. America is now a corporate government dictated to by big business using political puppets to legislate in their favor and profits. "In God We Trust."

This is America, under God, with Christians living with the threat or promise of eternal damnation. Imagine what America would be like if it were not for the threat of hell.
