Obama downplays his own whiteness I think. But he looks much more black than white so it just wouldn't fly with him identifying as the other way around. He looks black, and he identifies as black, so he can be black if he wants to be.
It isn't exactly the same as George Zimmermann who doesn't look white yet claims he is.
The president's mother, Ann Dunham, was a white lady. However, the hardcore Obama supporters always call him the first African-American president. Couldn't he equally be considered the 44th white president?
Why should that matter or even be necessary? Have there not been enough?

If you think you're a Klingon then you are. There is no international organization that issues Certificates of Race. Sometimes I identify myself as Spanish, Eskimo, Negro, American Indian or White. It all depends on the circumstances and the discounts being offered.
That has nothing to do with liberal or conservative. It is nothing but the "one-drop" rule that is ingrained in the culture of most generational Americans.
However, many liberals assign much importance to his skin color.
